Find Solutions to Agricultural Problems that Affect Americans Every Day, From Field to Table

The mission of the Genetics, Breeding and Animal Health Research unit, Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC), Clay Center, Nebraska, is to define the role of genetics in animal, pathogen, and microbial community interactions in domestic livestock production with the overall goal to develop effective genetic strategies that improve meat quality, animal health, and production efficiency.

The position is located in the Genetics, Breeding and Animal Health Research unit and the incumbent is responsible for participating in the development of complex statistical and computational data for scientists within the unit with ramifications for major ARS programs.

DUTIES: Back to top Utilize bioinformatics, molecular and quantitative genetics, experimentation and simulation to evaluate the methods and processes for improving meat products Develop tools for compilation of genomic data essential to research Provide input into the development of new statistical tools and methods used in acquiring research experimental data Establish the parameters and develop complex modeling techniques to determine statistical associations Identify genetic marker effects, calculate genomic breeding values, and estimate direct and maternal breed effects through analyses including genetic variances and co-variances Read and interpret regression and correlation charts, and prepare final analyses and interpretive comments to substantiate conclusion Conduct statistical analyses for both managing experiments and facilitating formal reports and manuscripts Communicate with IT personnel on database structures and data retrieval Serve as lead or co-author of journal articles, technical papers, and agency reports involving the theory or application of statistical methods Provide computing support regarding use of general (SAS, R [programming language]) and specialized (ASREML, GenSel, Plink) statistical software to scientists Train scientists on data analysis for genomics including exploratory data analysis, statistical inference, linear regression, modeling with parametric distributions, etc.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: All applicants must meet the Basic Requirement via one of the two ways below.

Education: You must possess a Bachelor's or higher degree that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing. MUST SUBMIT TRANSCRIPTS OR Combination: You must possess a combination of education and experience -- at least 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience offered in combination with educational courses to meet the requirements should include evidence of statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying known statistical techniques to data such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to the Basic Requirement above, all applicants must meet the Specialized Experience below.

GS-12

To qualify at the GS-12 level you must meet the following experience requirements:

Specialized Experience: You must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service which included but was not limited to:
Assisting in the choice of and testing of statistical methods utilizing genomic data and information; Assisting in planning statistical approach and establishing data collection specifications for research; Performing statistical analyses using genomic and genetic models; and Coordinating the collection and analyses of data and presenting results in formal papers. GS-13

To qualify at the GS-13 level you must meet the following experience requirements:

Specialized Experience: You must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service which included but was not limited to:
Devising and testing statistical methods utilizing genomic data and information; Planning statistical approach and establishing data collection specifications for research; Performing statistical analyses through the use of genomic and genetic models; Participating in the choice of and design of database structures and retrieval queries; Analyzing need for new or improved programs and procedures or better documentation specifications; and Coordinating the collection and analyses of data and presenting results in formal papers.
