Job Description:
Research Associate in Plant Genetics University of Cambridge - Plant Sciences Location: Cambridge Salary: £28,695 to £37,394 Hours: Full Time Contract Type: Contract / Temporary Placed on: 9th November 2015 Closes: 8th December 2015 Job Ref: PD07546 ★ View Employer Profile

An exciting opportunity has opened to work in the Henderson Laboratory, based in Central Cambridge in the Department of Plant Scicences. The BBSRC-funded postdoctoral research position is available as part of the sLoLa network 'Releasing natural variation in bread wheat by modulating meiotic crossovers'.

Recombination patterns are highly skewed in the bread wheat genome, which limits crop breeding. This project seeks to modify recombination distributions and thereby accelerate wheat improvement.

Previous work in the Henderson laboratory has defined important roles for chromatin in controlling plant crossover patterns (Choi et al, 2013 Nature Genetics, Yelina et al., 2015 Genes & Development). Within the sLoLa project the successful applicant will map chromatin patterns in the wheat genome. These data will be used to inform a synthetic biology approach, where targeted recombination systems will be transformed into wheat in order to direct recombination. These approaches will use cutting-edge technologies, including TAL DNA binding domains and Cas9/CRISPR.

Applicants should posses a PhD and proven track record in a relevant area of plant molecular genetics, or genomics/genetics in non-plant systems. Experience with wheat is desirable, but not essential. Knowledge of computational/bioinformatics approaches to genetics would also be an advantage. Technical excellence and the ability to work in a team are essential.

Through this network the researcher will obtain extensive training in plant genetics, genomics and synthetic biology, in the context of an agriculturally vital species. Work in Cambridge will interact with the other participating groups at the Universities or Bristol, Birmingham and Leicester and the John Innes Centre.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
