The Position The Genentech Bioinformatics and Computational Biology department seeks a highly motivated Computational Biologist to support clinical and basic science research efforts in support of the Infectious Disease department. The position collaborates closely with bench scientists in an embedded bioinformatics environment. The successful candidate will be expected to integrate high-level molecular biology and bioinformatics data to help translate basic discoveries on the biology of pathogens or host-pathogen interactions into novel medicine for patients. The position will also develop an independent research program that will contribute to the Infectious Disease mission of target discovery and development of novel therapeutics. Applicants must be able to work comfortably on an interdisciplinary team with members of the Infectious Disease department and should have a strong desire to pursue creative solutions to challenging problems. Who You Are

  • You have a PhD in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology or similar field, and preferably postdoctoral experience
  • You have a consistent publication record, preferably in the field of Infectious Disease
  • You can work successfully as the bioinformatics lead in cross functional teams that contribute to drug and biomarker development
  • You enjoy working closely with bench scientists to collaboratively solve complex biological problems
  • You have experience working with some types of large scale genomic data (e.g. RNA-seq, Exome-seq, ChIP-Seq, genotype, microarrays, etc.)
  • You are passionate about applying your skills in genomics analysis to utilize bioinformatics methods (e.g. from Bioconductor) to understand the biology of disease
  • You are comfortable writing code in languages such as R, Matlab, Perl, or Python for bioinformatics analyses
  • You have an interest in biology and will be able to contribute to scientific efforts focused on understanding diseases
  • You are able to present complex results, both verbally and in writing, to bioinformatics audiences and non-bioinformatics audiences
