Job Description:
Job Description The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy). We are seeking a Computational Biologist to join the team of Toby Gibson. The post holder will have a dual role both as interface with experimental researchers with bioinformatics issues and to develop bioinformatics training courses targeted at beginner and intermediate levels. Advanced courses are also foreseen and would be developed together with other local trainers and/or may invite outside specialists. The team develops and applies biological software tools in the analysis of protein data. We support and develop a number of public bioinformatics web servers, notably the Eukaryotic Linear Motif resource, ELM (http://elm.eu.org/). An important activity of the group is to interface with experimental research groups at EMBL and the post holder will be the focal point in providing help in the form of advice, troubleshooting and may offer scripting support of moderate complexity. In recent years, EMBL Heidelberg has significantly expanded the amount of in-house support for computational biology. Computational centres (http://www.embl.de/research/interdisciplinary_research/centres/index.html) cover statistics, networks and systems models. Bioinformaticians throughout the institute are horizontally connected through our in-house Bio-IT project. In addition EMBL is a partner in the de.NBI German bioinformatics support network. Thus the postholder will work closely with all these computational support initiatives to augment the range and quality of bioinformatics support provided by EMBL. Qualifications and Experience The successful candidate will have a degree and experience as a Bioinformatician or Computational Biologist. Knowledge of a range of bioinformatics tools should be sufficient to provide support and training. Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python, Perl and R is expected, while programming abilities in other languages e.g. SQL, JAVASCRIPT and HTML could be an advantage. Familiarity with UNIX-based OSes is also desirable. The candidate should have prior experience of working at the interface between biology and computation. As well as being able to work well within a team, the candidate must have good communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Initiative, flexibility and willingness to learn will complete your profile. Application Instructions Please apply online through www.embl.org/jobs Additional Information EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
