Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Core at Purdue supports and catalyzes significant biological research efforts across the university. Perform routine and project specific data analyses including, but not limited to, RNA-Seq and ChIP-Seq analyses, metagenomics/metatranscriptomics analysis, SNP prediction and identification and de novo assembly, mapping and annotation of sequence data using various software packages. Use scripting languages to manipulate the data files. Interact with other 'omics' centers, Cyber Center and Statistical Consulting Center to provide relevant services to the campus research community. Expected to stay current on new biological and bioinformatics methodologies. Support all the activities of the Bioinformatics Core at Purdue University. Required

  • Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Molecular Biology or related fields.
  • One years’ experience in the use and application of bioinformatics software and tools to address biological research needs.
  • Experience in Next Generation Sequencing data analysis.
  • Experience in using UNIX/LINUX OS and PERL scripting.
  • Strong biological science background.
  • Understanding of molecular biology, concepts of sequence assembly, alignment, annotation, working knowledge of genomics.
  • Working knowledge of 'R'.
  • Highly motivated and detail oriented.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with users of the Bioinformatics Core.
  • Strong visual, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to use scripting languages to manipulate the data files.
  • Competence to interact with other 'omics' centers, Cyber Center and Statistical consulting Center to provide relevant services to the campus research community.
  • Adeptness to stay current on new biological and bioinformatics methodologies.
  • Support all the activities of the Bioinformatics Core at Purdue University.
Preferred
  • Experience in handling large and complex data sets (with particular emphasis on Next Generation Sequencing such as 454, Illumina, and/or SOLiD) and associated bioinformatics analyses.
  • Experience in RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, Metagenomics/Metatrasncriptomics analyses.
  • Biological science background in non-model organisms; experience in genomics, and experience in handling data sets from Illumina or other NGS platforms.
  • Other relevant skills include SNP identification and detection, CNV analysis, genome and transcriptome assembly, and gene prediction and annotation.
