As part of the ICR/RMH CRUK-Centre Integrated Informatics and Big Data initiative, we have begun the implementation of 'The Knowledge Hub', an exciting new platform designed for sharing, integrating, visualising and mining a wide range of bio-medical data. We are seeking a highly motivated software developer to join the “The Knowledge Hub” team in the development of its hybrid (SQL/NoSQL/Graph) database and the tools to allow scientists to navigate, visualise and exploit it optimally.

If you enjoy working on graph/SQL/NoSQL database architectures: design, implementation and performance issues, as well as developing exciting data-visualization tools and exploring new technologies tied to a vibrant environment like ours, then this role is for you.

Responsibilities:
• Contribute to designing, implementing, populating, testing & optimising our hybrid database system [SQL + graph]
• Create and update database schemas that strike a good balance between query flexibility and performance
• Develop and implement software to automatically format data as required, perform quality control checks on the data and load data into the database
• Develop robust front-end utilities to allow for the ingestion of data into the database
• Construct an interface layer that allows users to interact with the database easily and intuitively
• Develop visualization tools that aid researchers handle, interpret and understand the data

Requirements:
• Bachelors in computer science, physics, mathematics, computational biology or a closely related field
• Profound knowledge of working with data: data structures, data representation, data management, data formats, data curation and data governance. Experience with biomedical data is a plus.
• Excellent programming skills
• Proven experience in scripting languages such as PHP, Perl, R, javascript
• Good MySQL/NoSQL design, development, debugging and tuning skills
• Experience with graph database technologies, including RDF, triples stores e.g. virtuoso, Neo4j & federated SPARQL query engines will be valued
• Solid web development including CSS, HTML, JQuery and PHP
• Good familiarity with Linux application servers
• Experience developing data visualization tools
• Familiarity with visualization libraries such as D3.js will be valued
• Ability to understand new concepts quickly
• Any other duties which may be required which are consistent with the nature and grade of the post. Essential : Education & knowledge
Educated to degree level in computer science, physics, mathematics, computational biology or closely a related field and significant exposure to a research environment

Desirable : Extended knowledge of computing in a medical field and experience of a wide range of projects in different areas
