Job Description The Genomics Technology Infrastructure (GTI) team seeks a talented backend developer to work on 3D spatial databases and pipelines at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), which is located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. The GTI team provides database and programmatic support for the Ensembl Project (http://www.ensembl.org), which is one of the most successful large-scale bioinformatics projects and a world leader in generating and providing genome annotation. In addition the GTI team provides support to Ensembl Genomes (http://www.ensemblgenomes.org) and helps to provide genomic annotation across multiple domains of life through a consistent and scalable infrastructure. As part of our collaborations we are working on a grant to develop Multi Scale Complex Genomics (MuG). Our aim is to provide programmatic interfaces to genomic annotation, and 3D spatial representations of chromosomal confirmation including advanced methods of searching these data structures. You will work alongside the existing core developers with responsibilities including: • Developing and loading new data into the open source CellBase project to serve genomic annotation • Developing pipelines to process a wide range of genomic data • Designing data schemas and databases to hold 3D genomic data using NoSQL technology • Creating RESTful APIs to access this data and perform queries on it • Communicating and collaborating with partners within the MuG consortium to gather requirements and develop solutions • Providing support for other projects within the institute using similar technology stacks EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. Qualifications and Experience Applicants should hold an MSc in a computer or biological science or have equivalent experience. Experience of NoSQL technology is essential. Previous experience of working in an open source/software development team is advantageous. Working knowledge of biology/genomics is desirable but not essential. Maintaining communication with several collaborating teams is an important aspect of the role. Good communication and interpersonal skills are therefore essential. A flexible mindset, a capacity for independent work, and a commitment to the delivery of a high-quality public service, are all required. Applicants must be experienced in Java. Advanced knowledge of database design and implementation is a must alongside experience of NoSQL and RDBMS. Knowledge of high throughput compute environments (LSF, SGE, COMPSs, Slurm) would be advantageous, as would knowledge of Hadoop based technology. Experience with Unix and software development tools including Git and GitHub are essential.
