Job Description:
The software developer will be part of a small team of developers and scientists that is responsible for the design and implementation of new data analysis and visualization tools. The successful candidate must be able to learn and work independently, yet collaborate effectively with co-workers. The work will take place in a dynamic environment where specifications often change rapidly in response to user demand, so the candidate must be able to be flexible in his or her software design and implementations. As a team, we strive to make our tools readily usable by experimental and computational scientists and work closely with them. This is a great opportunity to be involved in cutting-edge biomedical research and the open-source bioinformatics community.
Responsibilities include:
Conceptualize design of solutions for complex system/programs to visually represent biomedical data
Provide technical analysis, design, development, conversion, and implementation work
Document system builds and application configurations; maintain and update documentation as needed
Follow team software development methodology
Our lab in the Department of Biomedical Informatics is part of a vibrant community of scientists, physicians, and engineers whose goal is to advance the boundaries of knowledge. The Department has recently been formed at Harvard Medical School to lead development of computational and informatics techniques to address pertinent challenges in modern biological sciences and medicine. The Department’s faculty conduct research at the intersection of biomedicine and information sciences, including bioinformatics, functional genomics, translational medicine, and clinical knowledge management. Based on the Harvard Medical School Longwood Campus, it provides a rich scientific environment, with many seminar series and invited speakers of the highest caliber. The working environment combines the best features of a startup (fast pace, flexibility, flat hierarchies) with those of one of the leading medical schools (excellent benefits, outstanding opportunities for learning, great resources, name recognition). Minimum Qualifications
BSc in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related field and three years of work experience. Previous experience in front-end and/or visualization web software development. Expertise in HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and modern UI frameworks (e.g., AngularJS, Bootstrap) is expected.
Additional Desired Qualificiations
MSc in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or a related field and 5 years work experience. Self motivated, self-starter, able to manage own time and learn. Familiarity with modern software engineering practices such as automated testing and continuous integration/deployment is a plus. Furthermore, experience with visualization libraries (e.g. D3.js, Raphael, Processing.js), web application frameworks (e.g. Django, Flask, Rails), and databases (both SQL and NoSQL) are desired. Knowledge of AWS/Cloud, Docker, Vagrant, Apache; LESS/SASS; Solr/Elasticsearch; Git, Automated testing, continuous integration/deployment is beneficial.Job Information Position Type: Software Developer Start Date: ASAP Duration: Full Time Status: openContact InformationHarvard Medical School
