Job Description:
Research Assistant - Cancer Translation Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute - Biological Sciences Location: Cambridge Salary: £17,882 to £22,352 dependent on experience. Hours: Full Time Contract Type: Contract / Temporary Placed on: 17th March 2015 Closes: 31st March 2015 Job Ref: 82036

We are seeking a Research Assistant to join the Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. Our research aims at helping the development of new, less toxic, cancer treatments and improving the care of cancer patients by matching patients to the most appropriate treatment.

In recent years, it has become clear that mutations or other changes that occur within the DNA of cancer cells can dramatically affect how tumours respond to drugs. This knowledge can be used clinically to identify patients most likely to benefit from a specific drug. To help the development of cancer medicine we systematically test the effect of hundreds of candidate cancer drugs in the laboratory, either alone or in combinations, using a collection of cancer cells derived from more than 1,000 human tumours. We then match the genetic changes found in these cells to the effect of the different drugs. Our results should help develop new treatments and better care for patients affected by many different types of cancers.

Supporting this research you will work as part of a team involved in the expansion, maintenance and drug sensitivity screening of our human cancer cell line collection. This will include culturing human cancer cell lines, preparing microwell plates for use in cell viability assays and the operation of cutting-edge robotic liquid handling platforms.

You will have a good understanding of molecular biology with practical lab experience. Experience of tissue culture techniques or high throughput pipelines would be advantageous although not essential. You will be self-motivated, adaptable, organised and able to follow instructions accurately with attention to details. A team player who is also able to work independently, the successful applicants will be computer literate with good written and verbal communication skills.

Essential Skills

Experience working within a laboratory environment.  Degree in Biological Science or significant practical experience in laboratory setting. Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail. Confident working without supervision. Capable of adapting to regularly changing priorities & workloads. Ability to communicate effectively with other team members & collaborators. Enjoy working as part of a team.

Ideal Skill

Practical experience with human cell culture techniques.  Experience working within a high throughput laboratory environment. Experience operating liquid-handling robotics.  Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
