Senior Software EngineerQueen Mary University of LondonCentre for Translational BioinformaticsUnited Kingdom-London The Centre for Translational Bioinformatics, within the William Harvey Research Institute at QMUL is looking for an experienced Software Engineer/ Bioinformatician to build data warehouses for large scale integration and analysis of biomedical data generated by large research consortia (such as the MRC-PSORT consortium (www.psort.org.uk/)). Data types include Omic data, drug discovery data and electronic health records, encompassing a wide range of physiological and biomolecular measurements.
To unlock this data for researchers, we are building data warehouses using the open source tranSMART technology, written in Grails, jQuery / D3.js, R and Postgres. It will be your task to lead the technical development of these data warehouses with functionalities specifically needed for the Centre, in an extended team with other developers in QMUL Research IT and with our partners from the Innovative Medicines Initiative eTRIKs project (www.etriks.org; based at Institutions in London, France and Luxembourg) and the MRC Farr Institute London (www.farrinstitute.org/). This is a unique opportunity to be part of a new and enthusiastic team and a wider diverse community of research scientists, pharmaceuticals, bioinformaticians and IT experts.
To be considered for this role you will have substantial experience in software and data warehouse development, possess a thorough understanding of web application architecture and current web 2.0 trends and best practices, and knowledge of server side Java/J2EE technologies, working experience using web frameworks (e.g. Spring MVC, GRAILS, DJANGO…etc) and client side technologies (e.g. HTML, CSS, JQuery, Web Services REST/SOAP, AngularJS). It would also be an advantage to have knowledge of one or more of the following programming languages: C++, Perl, Python, Java or R. Interest in and/or knowledge of biology is a highly desired although not essential.
You will have a good first degree or Masters (or equivalent) in a related area, or a PhD (or equivalent) in computer science, software engineering, or informatics or significant software development experience with an emphasis on large-scale scientific data management. The postholder will be expected to play a central role in developing the data warehouse infrastructure at the William Harvey Research Institute as well as establishing collaborations with other groups with expertise in this area.
This full-time appointment and is funded for 3 years in the first instance. Starting salary will be in the range £33,476-£41,553 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
