Molecular Epidemiology and Epigenomics in Children’s Environmental Health School of Public Health University of California, Berkeley Berkeley, CA 94720-7360 http://ehsdiv.sph.berkeley.edu/holland/

The Children’s Environmental Health Laboratory in the Environmental Health Science Division, School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley is recruiting a full time,one-year Postdoctoral Scholar-Employee (with the possibility of a one-year extension). The targeted start date is June 1, 2016 and the recruitment will be opened until filled.

Early life exposures to environmental chemicals can influence adverse health outcomeslater in life. Epigenetic mechanisms are increasingly implicated in these complexinteractions. This position involves independent experimental and analytical researchproducing omics level data (DNA methylation, miRNA expression, genomics, transcriptomics, metabonomics and other biomarkers) in population studies on children’senvironmental health. The twelve member team of Children’s Environmental HealthLaboratory is based at the Berkeley Global Campus of UC Berkeley and is led by Prof.Nina Holland. There are substantial resources for experimental research in the lab, SPHBiorepository (Holland- Director) and UC Berkeley facilities. The ongoing projects areprimarily funded by NIH. Findings and innovations will advance our understanding of howenvironmental exposures in early life influence health of children, with primary focus onmechanisms, role of gene-environment interactions, epigenetics and other biomarkers.

Main responsibilities for this position are:

Develop and validate procedures for lab analyses of the epigenetic markers, specifically non-coding miRNAs, RNA seq and NGS in human samples and in cell cultures according to the goals of the project “Longitudinal epigenetic changes in a birth cohort with pre&postnatal OP exposure” and other related projects (Holland –PI).Refine research questions, informed by the scientific literature, evaluate available and novel emerging methodologies, conduct pilot and large-scale studies to address the research goals.Compile analyses and create reports on research findings for peer review scientific manuscripts and presentations at conferences.Coordinate with data manager and statistician to ensure data quality, storage and analysis.Collaborate with other researchers and staff at UC Berkeley including Holland Lab, UCBCore Facilities, SPH Biorepository, CERCH and other research institutions.Train and oversee graduate and undergraduate students in the Holland lab on the novel methods of experimental work in the wet lab setting, as well as genomic analyses.

This job description is not a complete list of duties, but is intended to give a general indication of the range of work that will be undertaken. It will vary over time as demands and priorities change.

There are exciting opportunities beyond the scope of the existingprojects for the candidate to develop their own research portfolio in coordination with Prof.Holland.

Basic qualification (at time of application): Candidates must have completed all degree requirements except the dissertation or beenrolled in an accredited PhD or equivalent degree in genetics, molecular biology, toxicology, molecular epidemiology, or a related field.Additional

Qualifications: (at appointment start date)Candidates must have PhD or equivalent degree in genetics, bioinformatics, epidemiology,or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications: Seasoned knowledge of the current laboratory methods of epigenetic analyses such as miRNAs and DNA methylation, and various biomarker methods to assess effects of toxicants in vivo and in vitro, and associated health outcomes.Ability to formulate research questions, develop research plan, and write papers describing research findings.1-3 years relevant research experience in generation and analysis of genome-wide or epigenome-wide association studies or other type of omics-level high dimensional and/or biomarker data.Demonstrated experience and familiarity with functional genetic and/or genomic data is expected.

Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC Berkeley Postdoc salary scales. The salary range for this position is starting from $43,692 to $51,120, depending on experience. Generous benefits are included: (http://vspa.berkeley.edu/postdocs)
