Position Summary

Under direction, the Bioinformatics Analyst will lead a project to implement a clinical genomics sign out system and a precision medicine knowledge base system. The Bioinformatics Analyst will develop user interfaces and back end including relational database, test and maintain the system and ensure robustness and high-availability of these systems in the clinical and research settings. This position will involve extensive coordination with industry partners and other team members as well as supervision and guidance of other students and employees if needed. The Bioinformatics Analyst will also perform statistical and integrative data analysis for genomics and clinical data in the context of the Institute for Precision Medicine (IPM). The position will involve using analysis software such as R/Bioconductor as well as next-generation sequencing tools such as STAR, TopHat, CuffLinks, BWA, GATK and others.

Position Activities

Lead the project to implement a clinical genomics sign out system that involves many partners including industry partners and clinical and pathology teams.

Assist in the development of new software tools and write new code for specific bioinformatics analyses.

Assist in the development and maintenance of genomic and clinical databases, create web user interfaces, implement APIs.

Assist in the creation of data warehouses combining genomic and clinical data, perform the statistical analyses on these datasets.

Perform statistical and integrative data analysis for genomics and clinical data.

Supervise bioinformatics analysts and students

Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements

BS in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering or Computer Science. Approximately 2 years of experience working with databases and user interfaces. Knowledge proficiency in Unix, web interface design, Ruby on Rails, Shiboleth/SAML, knowledge of R and R programming. Programming experience in at lease one of the following languages: Ruby, C, C++, Python, Perl or Java.

Highly Desired Requirements

Knowledge of clinical IT systems, Clinical ontologies e.g. OMOP, clinical IT system communication e.g. HL7 messaging. MS in systems biology, computational biology or bioinformatics. Experience in parallel processing and using cluster. Web programming and database design. Experience in biology and/or cancer biology.

Skill and Abilities

Excellent communication skills are required as there are many people involved in precision medicine processes and workflows, from technicians, scientist’s programmers onto physician and patients. Independent thinking, taking initiative.
