Job Description:

Job Description: D. E. Shaw Research is seeking outstanding Ph.D. level scientists with 10 years of expertise in structure-based drug design or related areas to join our New York–based team. This is a unique opportunity to develop and work with transformative technology in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.

Areas relevant to our efforts include computer-aided drug design, fragment-based approaches, molecular modeling, chemo- and bioinformatics, medicinal chemistry, and target analysis and selection. Specific knowledge of any of these areas is less critical, however, than exceptional intellectual ability and a record of impact in drug discovery.

Successful candidates will directly contribute to research projects and further the group’s drug discovery aims. We are committed to fostering a stimulating, rewarding, and flexible work environment, and we are prepared to offer above-market compensation to candidates of truly exceptional ability.

D. E. Shaw Research is pursuing an ambitious, long-term strategy aimed at fundamentally transforming the process of drug discovery. We have developed a special-purpose supercomputer capable of simulating bio-molecular phenomena that are relevant to the understanding and potential treatment of cancer, diabetes, and a wide variety of other diseases.

Additional Information: A successful hire would directly contribute at a high and low level to our drug discovery efforts by both contributing to ongoing projects, potentially leading new relevant discovery projects, and proposing implementation of any relevant workflows while keeping our unique resources (Anton and molecular dynamics) in mind. Throughout, they would help shape our overall drug discovery strategy, which may include new targets, outside partnerships, or collaborations, when appropriate.

Relevant candidates will have a PhD in a relevant field (Computational Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, etc.) and be computational modelers with a broad and accomplished skill-set possessing an impressive track record (10+ years) of creating real impact in the pharmaceutical industry with regards to drug discovery.Other skills may include but are not limited to the ability to integrate and incorporate experimental data into computational approaches, a strong understanding of medicinal chemistry with regards to drug design, and experience in the process of bringing molecules to the pre-clinical/clinical stage. We are looking for computational chemists who have successfully led drug discovery projects from inception. This is in contrast to modelers who have played support roles by retrospectively generating structural models for molecules designed by chemists.
