The Genome, Environment and Microbiome (GEM) Community of Excellence (www.buffalo.edu/gem) at the University at Buffalo (UB) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral-level bioinformatics research scientist with a background in microbiome analysis. GEM has a mission to advance innovative research that integrates genome and microbiome science with environmental factors, with a focus on epidemiological approaches. The successful candidate will be the key analyst for institutional, NIH, and Industrial funded microbiome and genome projects, working with research teams across the Community. The GEM Community provides a highly collaborative teamwork environment with access to state-of-the-art computational infrastructure and a highly automated pipeline. The Community will provide mentorship from faculty with expertise in genomics, the microbiome and epidemiology, creating a powerful, unique approach to studying disease. A major focus will be the development of novel methods to facilitate clinical decision-making and to develop a better understanding of major chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
Qualifications: PhD in genetics, genome sciences, molecular biology, bioengineering, bioinformatics, or related field, or equivalent practical experience. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in microbiome research including 16S or whole-genome shotgun based analysis. Fluency in standard bioinformatics tools with experience with Python, Perl, and/or R is required.
