Job Summary
A postdoctoral position is immediately available in the PennCHOP Microbiome program to study host-microbiota interactions at mucosal surfaces, their impact on the development of the immune system and inflammation, and strategies for selectively manipulating the microbiome. This project will involve a collaboration with the PennCHOP Microbiome program co-director Dr. Bob Baldasanno, immunologist Dr. Michael Silverman, and microbiologist Dr. Paul Planet.
The work will involve cellular and molecular immunology and microbiology, the analysis of murine and human microbiomes, culture and genetic manipulation of gut commensal organisms and synthetic and naturally occurring bacterial consortia, as well as work with germ-free and gnotobiotic mice. Successful candidates should have a recent Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree, and background in either immunology or microbiology.
Required skills: Basic immunologic and microbiologic techniques, microbial genetics, cell culture, FACS, ELISA, PCR, immunoblotting; willingness to work with laboratory animals and human blood/stool/skin samples; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work collaboratively.
Optional skills: Experience with gnotobiotic and germfree animal work; molecular biology skills; basic bioinformatics knowledge, ability to work in the QIIME environment and other bioinformatics tools.
Required Education and Experience
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
PhD in microbiology, cell biology, computational biology, computational science, genomics/genetics or related fields Proficient in mammalian cell culture and modern molecular and cell biology protocols An established track record (as evidenced by publications in peer-viewed journals) in relevant field is required Experience with next-gen sequencing technologies, genome editing, and enhancer assays is preferred. Exhibited knowledge of statistics and probability important to bioinformatics research Proficiency in R or similar commonly used statistical languages Basic proficiency with Python, Perl, or other languages Exhibited knowledge of biological network analysis SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Strong research skills
Effective problem solving/critical thinking skills
Ability to work independently
Ability to exercise discretion and judgment
Value for research integrity and collaborative research
High level of motivation
Good communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills
All CHOP employees who work in a patient building or who provide patient care are required to receive an annual influenza vaccine unless they are granted a medical or religious exemption.
