PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.
JOB DESCRIPTION
THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON FUNDING APPROVAL
The ACUC Administrator position is responsible for oversight and implementation of policies and procedures associated with the animal care and use program. Duties include: 1) broadly based administrative support to the NCI Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC), 2) serves as primary liaison between the ACUC and investigators in disseminating policy and procedural guidelines governing animal care and use and in ensuring that animal-based research activities are conducted in compliance with applicable regulations, 3) coordination and facilitation of animal study proposal (ASP) development, review, approval and renewal processes, 4) utilizing a web-based ASP data and document management system, 5) serving as central point of contact for users of the system for purposes of training and technical support, 6) logistical support to the ACUC including scheduling monthly meetings, creating agendas, documenting proceedings, maintaining records and executing actions taken as a result of committee deliberations, 7) coordinates and contributes to the review, modification and dissemination of ACUC guidelines and standard operating procedures, 8) coordinates periodic animal facility and laboratory inspections, 9) documentation of findings and corrective action, 10) tracks operational metrics (active ASPs, animal usage), and 11) prepare recurring animal-related regulatory reports.
Qualifications:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of an Associate’s degree from an accredited college/ university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or two (2) years related experience in lieu of degree Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency A minimum of three (3) years related experience Knowledge of laboratory animal technology and federal laws, policies, regulations and procedures governing the care and use of research animals Knowledge of Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals Experience in the use of electronic documentation and data management systems
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree Knowledge of ACUC functions Possess a high degree of independence and judgment, strong attention to detail, excellent interpersonal, organizational and communications skills, and use of computer software applications.
