Job Description:
The Applied Computer Scientist will reside in the Network Dynamics and Simulation Sciences Laboratory (NDSSL) Division within Virginia Bioinformatics Institute, and work with an interdisciplinary team of researchers and scientists in the areas of data and network analytics, statistics and high performance computing systems. In addition and on behalf of the NDSSL division, the Applied Computer Scientist will be expected to publish extensively in peer reviewed high impact journals and conferences on topics related to the NDSSL’s research topics. The initial appointment will be a one-year, restricted appointment. This position will hold the faculty rank of Postdoctoral Associate. Responsibilities: - Develops novel analytical and algorithmic tools for analyzing complex networks and graph dynamical systems, in particular those arising in the study of large socio-technical, biological and information systems. The focus is on one or more of (i) scalable tools from large-scale data mining, machine learning and analysis, (ii) rigorous computational and statistical techniques, and (iii) efficient implementation in different high performance computing systems, and integrating them with other libraries. - Works with group members on (i) analyzing large-scale simulation based models for public health epidemiology and contagion processes on social networks, and (ii) problems in bioinformatics and development of cyberinfrastructures. This includes participating in stakeholder-defined case studies for informing public policy. - Assists group members in developing new programs in high performance computing, complex systems and computational biology. This involves assisting in writing white papers, proposals, preparing presentations and designing short courses. - As part of the research group’s outreach mission, mentors high school, undergraduate and graduate students doing internships in NDSSL on work related to own area of expertise, assists group members in organizing workshops and conferences in complex networks and socio-technical systems. - Becomes familiar with complex systems in general and with several specific systems under study in the NDSSL division, which is focused on creating scalable, efficient computational models of interacting biological, informatics, and social infrastructures. - Writes manuscripts for publication and presents results at professional societies, university seminars and scientific conferences, and uses multimedia for presenting research results on the Internet. - Engages in collaborative work with peers both within the group and outside with the aim to achieve the above objectives. - Becomes familiar and actively participates in all activities in the NDSSL division, which are not directly her/his own. - Routinely communicates research progress with supervisor, peers and other appropriate staff. - Assists NDSSL researchers in the development of grant proposals, scientific papers and other publications, as needed. - Publishes the original results of own research in peer-reviewed high-impact scientific journals. - Takes the initiative in finding solutions to scientific problems that arise in day-to-day research. In accordance with university policy for non-student positions, this position will require a conviction check. Required Qualifications: - PhD in Computer Science, Discrete Mathematics, Statistics or related fields. - Demonstrated expertise in data and network analytics, statistics, high performance computing or related fields. - Experience designing and analyzing algorithms for problems on complex networks in different high performance computing environments. - Ability and willingness to work in a multi-disciplinary research team on large projects related to socio-technical and biological systems. - Experience in developing publications based on individual research and evidence of publications in peer-reviewed journals. - Demonstrated creativity, independence, high motivation, and good communication skills. - Strong work habits and the ability to work independently as well as with research group.
