We are seeking an enthusiastic Bioinformatics Database Engineer to work on PHI-base (www.PHI-base.org), a resource allowing researchers without specialist bioinformatics skills to understand how fungal, bacteria and protist pathogens cause disease in plants, animals and humans. PHI-base containing data from over 200 pathogenic species. The successful candidate will develop the existing scheme to support new data types and work on a new curation tool called PHI-CANTO, that will permit researchers to enter the data from their own research publication into PHI-base in a guided and controlled way. The position is funded as part of PhytoPath (www.phytopathdb.org) a collaborative project with the Ensembl team at EMBL-EBI that has been BBSRC-funded for the last 5 years. PhytoPath links the phenotyping data in PHI-base to the sequenced genome of plant pathogens maintained by, and makes use of the free and open-source CANTO framework (10.1093/bioinformatics/btu103) to permit community data curation. You will work at Rothamsted Research within both the Wheat Pathogenomics and Applied Bioinformatics teams which bring together biology, molecular genetics, computational science and bioinformatics to provide new leads for crop improvement and smart crop protection.

The team has applied for a BBSRC funding renewal to extend the project until mid 2020. In addition, PHI-base has recently joined the wide ELIXIR Data for life project (www.elixir-europe.org) as an agricultural omics resource provider into the Elixir-UK-node.
