Job Description:
The Pirbright Institute is seeking a Bioinformatician for the large amount of sequence data produced, thanks to its sequencing facility in containment sporting a modern computer cluster with 500 CPU cores and 0.5 PB of disk space.

The successful candidate will join the Integrative Biology and Bioinformatics group led by Dr Paolo Ribeca.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

-To work on the analysis of data produced at the institute. That will include the sequencing and bioinformatics analysis of several hundred of viral genomes, derived from samples of animals infected by lumpy-skin disease, foot-and-mouth disease, and African swine fever.

-Take part in all the steps of the process, including experimental sequencing design, data production and subsequent analysis Have a reasonably clear understanding of the basics of biology and virology.

-Understanding of protocol-specific sequencing technologies (such as ChIP-seq or RNA-seq) and their scope and usefulness for the design of experimental studies will be considered a plus.

-Collaborate on the setup and maintenance of related data analysis pipelines.

The post is graded at a Band E and is a Limited Term Contract with funding for 2 years.

This is a full time role of 37 hour week, Monday to Friday.

Person Specification Essential:

-Degree in bioinformatics or related subject, or equivalent experience.

-Technical skills .

-Experience with bioinformatics tools.

-Meticulous attention to detail.

-Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills.

-Time Management skills.

-Reliability under pressure.

-Decision making and problem solving skills.

-Ability to work independently.

-Willingness to work as part of a team, open-minded and cooperative.

-High level of motivation and ambition.

Desirable:

-Quantitative background

-Experience with high-throughput sequencing.

-Knowledge of wet-lab techniques.

-Understanding of biology and virology.

-Understanding of protocol-specific high-throughput sequencing experiment design and analysis workflows.
