Job Description:
The Computational Biology group is seeking an individual to contribute to fundamental research programs studying microbial communities and environmental microbiology. Under the supervision of senior staff, the successful candidate will be responsible for data analysis of various high-throughput ‘omics platforms, including DNA/RNA sequence data, proteomics and metabolomics. The position involves work with various computing platforms, statistics and data integration methods. The incumbent will assist in computational biology methods development and validation; work directly with experimental biologists in interdisciplinary teams, and to contribute to presentations and journal articles.

This position requires at least 20 hours per week and is a project specific hire. The anticipated duration of employment is not expected to last beyond September 30, 2018.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma/G.E.D. with 2-3 years of relevant experience or a relevant technical institute graduate or AA degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biostatistics, Computer Science or Engineering.

• Background sufficient to carry out interdisciplinary research, particularly related to the analysis of ‘omics data, microbiology and environmental science, and be proficient in one or more scripting languages (Perl, Python), as well as one or more statistical computing languages (R or MatLab). S/he should have a strong fundamental biology background with statistical computing experience.

• Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated interest in working on multi-disciplinary teams and collaborative research. The candidate should also have an interest in applying new approaches and knowledge to science problems associated with carbon cycling, bioenergy, climate change, and/or the underlying physiological and biological mechanisms governing host-microbiome interactions.
