Job Description:
Working under limited supervision, the research assistant 3 will coordinate and carry out laboratory activities within the CWRU SOM Biomedical Research Building. This position is responsible for the general maintenance and organization of the laboratory space and supplies. In addition, the Research Assistant 3 will carry out complex biological experiments of a non-routine nature aimed to improve diagnosis of, and discover treatments for, pediatric neurodegenerative diseases. The research assistant will work closely with the principle investigator to conduct research and train additional lab members, as well as supervise undergraduate research students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Manage laboratory activities including maintenance, supplies inventory, experiment equipment and overall organization of the lab. (30%)

Generate and differentiate human induced pluripotent stem cells and embryonic stem cells to various cell types of interest. As well as perform complex cell-based assays of both routine and non-routine nature. (20%)

Perform various molecular biology techniques, biochemical functional assays, and next generation sequencing. Work together with the Genomics Core to determine sample quality and improve protocols. (15%)

Adopt new protocols, methods and techniques as required by research projects. Evaluate adequacy of techniques. Evaluations involve both biological and analytical (statistical) considerations. (9%)

Perform histological analysis of disease phenotypes from embryonic and postnatal mice. Analysis will involve both biological and analytical (statistical) methods. (9%).

Manage a small mouse-breeding colony and generate experimental animals for phenotype analysis and tissue collection. (9%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

-Provide input and recommendations to the principle investigator regarding significant developments in research projects, and keep accurate, up-to-date, and detailed experimental records. (4%)

-Generate figure quality data for submission to journals and funding agencies.

-Contribute to next generation sequencing analysis. (1%)

-Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)

CONTACTS:

Department: Daily contact with the principle investigator, research associates, research assistants, post-doctoral fellows. Weekly contact with members of the Genomics Core to maintain workflow.

University: Weekly contact with support personnel, department assistants, and principal investigators and researchers from other departments and centers across the CWRU campus to maintain workflow.

External: Contact with outside vendors as needed to exchange information.

Students: Daily contact with student workers to supervise their research activities and assist in their training.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervise the work of undergraduate students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

-Experience: 3 to 5 years of related work experience.

-Education/Licensing: Bachelor's degree in biology, genetics, bioinformatics or other science required. Master degree desired.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

-Knowledge and understanding of common concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of genetics, biology and biochemistry.

-Knowledge of good laboratory skills and practices is required, specifically; knowledge of laboratory practices for cell culture is highly desirable.

-Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals from a broad spectrum of disciplines, technical and educational backgrounds within the department, School and University, and with individuals outside the University.

-Strong interpersonal skills; ability to effectively work with various individuals throughout the department, School, University and individuals external to the University. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in order to achieve a goal or complete a task.

-Strong organization skills; must be detail oriented, possess the ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines, and demonstrate attention to accuracy and have the ability to keep accurate and complete records.

-Ability to problem-solve effectively, and demonstrate good analytical skills, good judgment and logical decision-making.

-Ability to work independently with limited supervision. Must demonstrate a strong work ethic, self -motivation, and a commitment to high quality.

-Ability to carry out complex research assignments of a non-routine nature, including devising new protocols and techniques for research projects involving a high degree of skill and training.

-Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Mac and/or Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), Adobe (illustrator, photoshop, acrobat), and with internet navigation.Experience developing or running bioinformatics toolkits to analyze next generation sequencing data is highly desired. Familiarity with these applications/software programs and willingness to conceptually understand next generation sequencing analysis is required.

-Good training skills are desired. Ability to articulately present information and instruction to others is required.

-Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to work under pressure; must be able and willing to work in a fast-paced, changing environment to meet changing demands and pre-determined deadlines.

-Willingness and ability to rely on and follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

General laboratory environment, including biosafety level 2 tissue culture work. This position will have contact with or exposure to the following hazards: blood-borne pathogens, chemicals and infectious agents. Laboratory safety and blood-borne pathogen training is required and will be provided. Appropriate personal protective equipment will be required, including gloves, lab coat and protective eyewear.

Case's animal facilities are accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and is managed according to the "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals” appropriate Federal Animal Welfare Regulations, and the Public Health Service “Policy on the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals." This position, and all animal research personnel, are subject to internal compliance to SOM Animal Resource Center Standard Operating Procedures and to compliance regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines, the State of Ohio Veterinary Practice Act, Federal Drug Enforcement Administration regulatory guidelines, US Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine regulations and other applicable regulatory guidelines.
