Job Description:
A bioinformatics position is available for a post which will be embedded in both the BIH Bioinformatics Platform (led by Dr Dieter Beule) and the BIH Metabolomics Platform (led by Dr Jennifer Kirwan). Make a difference! We believe in selecting people based on their abilities, not on their stereotypes. We will strive to give all capable candidates an opportunity and select candidates based only on their ability to do the job. We are happy to discuss flexible work patterns if requested, job sharing or other solutions that enable strong candidates to work better. Your role will be embedded in a centre of expertise in bioinformatics/omics data analysis and a centre of expertise in mass spectrometry based metabolomics. You will apply and improve bioinformatics and biostatistics approaches to analyze metabolomics mass spectrometry and wider omics datasets. We are seeking an innovative bioinformatician who is capable of both implementing existing analysis methodologies, but also developing new approaches as required to enable high quality analysis of research data. You will also be involved in providing statistical and related support to the implementation of data processing pipelines for metabolomics mass spectrometry data. We are a strongly collaborative team and an ability to work well and communicate well with others is a major requirement. The ideal candidate will be a team player with an in-depth understanding of statistical methods used for analyzing MS data.

Requirements:

  • MS degree in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, engineering or similar. At least 3 years work/research experience in MS data analysis, relevant PhD is a plus
  • Sound experience in processing and analysis of high dimensional data required (multivariate analysis, hierarchical clustering, normalization, imputation, ANOVA, LM), experience with classification and machine learning methods or pathway mapping and analysis is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct well documented and reproducible data analysis and experience in defining and building data analysis pipelines required, experience in data visualization, integration and interpretation is a plus
  • Good programming skills especially in R, Python or C++ required. Additional experience with bash is a plus, proficiency in using version control (e.g. git) needed, experience with HPC environment is a plus
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English (German language skills are a plus, but not essential), ability to condense and present scientific results to both scientific and non-specialist audiences
  • A major advantage would be an in-depth understanding of computational methods for MS data processing and the usage of public data resources, with a good knowledge of existing tools and file formats (OpenMS, MaxQuant, mzML etc.). Previous experience of MS data processing pipeline development would be an advantage.
