Job Description:
The Data Science Intern supports informatics efforts within the Institute, with a special emphasis on operational data science activities, initially focusing on natural language processing. The incumbent will report to the Team Lead for Bioinformatics and Business Analysis, working closely under the supervision of the Bioinformatics Data Scientist. Principle Duties and Responsibilities: • Develop natural language processing algorithms to aid in operationalizing NLP in a data curation platform • Use machine learning algorithms (e.g. sense2vec) to train against cancer registry data and validate output • Identify and extract cancer registry data elements that are poor candidates for rule-based natural language processing algorithms • Assist in ensuring free text notes are properly staged for running a production NLP pipeline • Use the Partners HealthCare values to govern decisions, actions and behaviors. Qualifications: • Currently enrolled in, or recently completed degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field. • 1+ year bioinformatics experience with either Perl, Python, SAS, R, SQL, or related data analysis language • 1+ year experience with statistics, data analysis, and natural language processing Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required : • Strong programming skills • Ability to implement and approve upon data science algorithms • Critical thinking and ability to research the scientific literature • Ability to successfully negotiate and collaborate with others of different skill sets, backgrounds and levels both internal and external to the organization Working Conditions: • Office environment with some local travel. • As projects and priorities dictate, may be required to work occasional non-standard hours to support major projects.
