Job Description:
We are currently seeking a Database Developer-Architect to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in La Jolla, CA. The candidate will be responsible for designing, building and managing our large and complex database systems based on Postgres, mySQL, ElasticSearch and Solr. These systems form the core our analytical genomics platform, leveraged by internal and external customers, and is at the core intersection of Big Data and Biology. The role also involves building/managing ETL processes, performance tuning, administration and maintenance of the development and production database servers. Prior experience working with relational data in the billion row range will be required. Responsibilities include: • Manage and maintain the data tier of Synthetic Genomics' genetic analysis platform. Systems include ETL, operational data stores, search and analytics engines. • Architecture, data modeling and stored function development. • Assist installation, deployment and backup operations. • Safeguard data integrity and security in all existing databases and data exchange technology. • Support development, QA and production activities. • Generate and maintain documentation of data store architectures, configurations, operations, and maintenance. Required Skills: • Demonstrated ability to design and sustain high-performance data analysis solutions. • Solid understanding of database architectures and data modeling. • Practical experience in performance tuning, monitoring and configuring database servers for high availability and scalability. • Experience with cloud-based data services (especially AWS) preferred • Results-oriented, enjoy solving complex problems and implementing cutting-edge solutions. • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment. • Excellent analytical skills. • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with prior successful experience interacting with highly technical or scientific staff and teams. • Capable of working easily with business and product users to explain database concepts in simple terms. • Identify and evaluate industry trends in database systems to serve as a subject matter expert of information and advice. Required Experience: • BA/BS Degree preferably in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field. • 5+ years of enterprise database experience and at least 2 years expressly with Postgres and at least 1 year with mySQL. • 5+ years’ experience building enterprise data models, data flow diagrams and doing behavioral data analytics. • Experience working as part of a high velocity Agile enterprise-class project. • Excellent oral and written communication skills. • Work closely with internal scientific and computational biology and bioinformatics teams to define issues, propose and build solutions in support of prioritized initiatives.
