Job Description:
The Bioinformatics Shared Resource at the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) and University of Utah (http://huntsmancancer.org/bioinformatics) is seeking a full-time Bioinformatics Data Analyst. This individual will join an established team of bioinformatic professionals to provide experiment design, data analysis, software development, compute infrastructure, and analysis training services to the research and clinical genomics communities at the HCI and University of Utah.

HCI, located on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City, was recently awarded Comprehensive Cancer Center designation by the National Cancer Institute. HCI houses a high-throughput genomics core and other world-class research facilities in a beautiful physical setting. Our phase 4 expansions will increase research space by 100 %, house a consolidated Biocomputing/ Research Informatic center, and is scheduled to open in 2017. Salt Lake City offers excellent access to the outdoors as well as interesting cultural experiences at a very reasonable cost of living.

Essential Functions:

1. 1. Analysis of data from high throughput sequencing experiments (RNASeq, ChIPSeq, BisSeq, Germline/Somatic variant detection, single cell genomics…)

2. Create, maintain, and document computer software for data analysis and management.

3. Assist researchers with the design of genomic experiments.

4. Instruct personnel in collaborating labs in the use of analysis methods and tools.

5. Create, maintain, and document computer software for data analysis and data management.

5. Assist researchers with the design of genomic experiments and grant writing.

6. Instruct personnel in in the use of genomic analysis tools.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency typically required

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking.

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s of Science degree with a focus on Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or Molecular Biology or equivalency; plus four years of experience in genomic data analysis required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

-Software development experience in object oriented programming using Java, Python, and or C++ and familiarity with molecular biology, genomics and some biostatistics helpful.

-Master of Science degree or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science and/or Life Sciences preferred.

This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients

Preferences:

1. Masters of Science or PhD degree with a focus on Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Genomics or equivalency.

2. Three or more years of experience in genomic data analysis.

3. Proven software development skills in a Linux environment using an object oriented programming language such as Java, Python, or C++.

4. Strong understanding of molecular biology, genomics, and biostatistics.

5. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
