Job Description:
Under supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Computational Biologist will develop computational methodologies and analysis techniques relevant to cancer stem cell research. The work associated with this position will be part of the daily activities of the Division of Regenerative Medicine Labs.

The goals for this position are: i) provide computational support to biologists and clinicians in interdisciplinary cancer and/or stem cell research projects, ii) to develop and design code to utilize bioinformatics tools and computational biology analysis methodologies, and iii) prepare data and results for publication or dissemination as part of databases, web sites, electronic notebooks and other resources. This will require the incumbent to apply high-level, scientific expertise and technical mastery to create pipeline tools that enable the next-gen sequencing analysis (NGS) of DNA and RNA and related data visualization.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

-M.S or Ph.D. level Degree in Computational Biology, Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science; or comparable combination of education and experience with considerable focus in scientific software development.

-Expertise in scientific programming in the life sciences in any OOP or scripting programming language. Track record of productivity and delivering well-designed and scientific software in an industrial or academic environment.

-In-depth knowledge in area of expertise with an understanding and advanced ability to independently analyze a needs requirement, develop, and implement systems for complex applications.

-Demonstrated skill to plan and carry out projects to completion in a time sensitive environment.

-Demonstrated exceptional analytic, inductive and deductive reasoning skills. Proven technical leadership and team orientation.

-Practical experience with UNIX systems, SSH, and secure FTP, with a willingness and ability to update and increase computer skills and knowledge as needed.

-Significant practical experience with programming/scripting languages including R, Python, Bash, and C.

-Demonstrated knowledge of bioinformatics and computational biology approaches and tools.

-Excellent interpersonal, written and oral presentation skills. Writing skills appropriate to the creation of clear and persuasive scientific proposals and clear communications to colleagues in computational science and allied fields, as well as to technical and clerical employees.

-Demonstrated oral skills that lend themselves to clear and persuasive presentations to peer review groups and industry decision-makers in the scientific arena.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

-Advanced demonstrated experience developing the presentation layer of a dynamic, database-driven web application using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and JSP in a Java EE environment.

-Embrace and practice UCSD’s Principles of Community including the commitment to strive to maintain a climate of fairness, cooperation and professionalism.

-Excellent skill and ability to conduct web/online resource and literature searches.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Occasional travel may be required.
