The UC San Diego School of Medicine comprises 19 departments providing undergraduate and graduate medical education as well as conducting extensive cutting-edge medical research. It has the ninth highest National Institutes of Health total funding out of 136 schools of medicine, according to NIH’s Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tools in 2014. In 2013, UC San Diego School of Medicine faculty ranked third nationally in research funding per faculty member, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. The Department of Medicine investigators represent a wide range of basic, preclinical, and human derived data biomedical research activity to develop new treatments for major diseases (e.g., cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes) as well as an understanding of the changes at the cellular and molecular level that lead to disease.

The Mesirov Lab: Research in the Mesirov lab focuses on applying machine learning and statistical methods to functional genomics data derived from cancer patients and models with the goal of better understanding the underlying biological mechanisms of disease, improving stratification of patients with respect to different treatment outcomes, and identifying novel drug targets. The lab is committed to the development of practical, accessible, open source software tools to bring these methods to the general biomedical research community. These tools support the research of hundreds of thousands of investigators worldwide. Thus, to achieve its goals, the lab includes both computational biologists and software engineers working together to further our understanding and treatment of disease
