Job Description:
The Center for Computational Biology & Bioinformatics (CCBB) in the UCSD Department of Medicine provides bioinformatics support for UCSD investigators and affiliated institutions, training of scientists in computational biology and bioinformatics, and the development of novel algorithms for large-scale bioinformatics datasets. A special focus is on the analysis of next generation sequencing data, especially in the context of translational medicine. The staff reporting to the Executive Director will be critical for establishing the technical foundation for computational analysis as well as the interpretation of the results downstream.

The Computational Biologist will collaborate with UCSD School of Medicine faculty and investigators by performing RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, and methylation analyses at the UCSD Center for Computational Biology & Bioinformatics. The Computational Biologist is responsible for performing analysis of next generation sequencing datasets, biological interpretation of analysis results, interfacing with faculty and investigators, performing outreach and educational activities, and developing and implementing data analysis methods using cloud computing and high performance computing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

-Master’s or Ph.D. level degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or comparable combination of education and experience with considerable focus in computational biology.

-Expert knowledge and research experience with NGS data analysis in the areas of genome analysis and/or epigenomics.

-Expertise in scientific programming in the life sciences in any OOP or scripting programming language. Track record of productivity and delivering well-designed and scientific software in an industrial or academic environment.

-In-depth knowledge in area of expertise with an understanding and advanced ability to independently analyze, develop, and implement systems for complex applications.

-Proven skills to plan and carry out projects to completion in a time sensitive environment.

-Exceptional analytic, inductive and deductive reasoning skills. Proven technical leadership and team orientation.

-Practical experience with UNIX systems, SSH, and secure FTP, with a willingness and ability to update and increase computer skills and knowledge as needed.

-Significant practical experience with programming/scripting languages including R, Python, and Bash.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

-Embrace and practice UCSD’s Principles of Community including the commitment to strive to maintain a climate of fairness, cooperation and professionalism

-Demonstrated scientific publication record.

-Background in molecular biology, cancer genomics, and human disease biology or neurodevelopmental disease.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Occasional travel required.
