Job Description:
Join one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic medical centers, University of Chicago Medicine. As an Analytics Engineer:

  • You will be responsible for developing and managing analyses for key business areas through the Center for Quality’s Clinical Effectiveness Analytics Team
  • You will analyze and identify problems to support business objectives by leveraging their expertise of data systems and processes
  • You will develop, execute, manage, and refines the information systems to create a variety of reports for the key business areas and then guides the examination and interpretation of those reports
  • You will supports business objectives through their expertise of data, implementing, and maintaining basic and complex reporting and analytical solutions with a strategic approach for future foreseeable needs and objectives of the business line
  • Special attention will be required for aesthetics and visualization of data, keeping the end-user and purpose of data messaging a priority
  • You will be an advocate for appropriate transparency and extension of business line data across the enterprise to support the accurate use of this information
  • You must demonstrate flexibility with changing priorities and urgent unplanned priorities
  • You will be a key liaison who will collaborate with interdisciplinary members of the healthcare team, including physicians, nurses, professional allied healthcare workers, support staff and other enterprise analytics teams (e.g. Quality Analytics, Clarity Team, Office of Managed Care), and follow the organizational approach to analytics as articulated by the Data Governance Council

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

Reporting and data management:

  • Prepare reports for staff and leadership, providing clear documentation of processes and data definitions, to drive business objectives, serving as the lead liaison for the business line for the intake, prioritization, and delivery of reporting requests and projects
  • Perform detailed examinations of reports, benchmarking data, accompanied by literature reviews where appropriate, (i.e. analyses) to inform the department, and enterprise, related to business line data
  • Design and maintain effective and efficient processes for the measurement, tracking, reporting and analysis of business line data. Design efficient processes to minimize manual steps for recurrent reporting
  • Prepare specifications, designs, data models and diagrams from which reporting solutions can be effectively developed and interpreted by others
  • Support crisp project management and communication through regular status reports to business line and analytics leadership
  • Business line expertise and responsibilities
  • Develop and present detailed analyses to a variety of audiences, ensuring the analyses support business line objectives and can be presented by recipients to subsequent audiences
  • Be conversant in all associated business processes and data, at the level of a data steward, prior to developing or validating analytics products or processes
  • Participates in and prepares documents for regularly scheduled team meetings.
  • Ensures timeliness and compliance with external reporting requirements of the business line, if applicable
Leadership:
  • Validate, troubleshoot, and support corrections of reporting from business line colleagues or analysts outside of the business line who are working with business line data
  • The effective lead analyst will support management with the development and mentoring of other data analysts within the business line. This will achieved through validating analyst work and promoting adherence to standard analytics processes, as well as serving as mentor and back-up support for critical work of those analysts
  • Catalyze conversations and communication to avoid unnecessary redundancy of work, and efficient processes
Enterprise Analytics
  • Ensure that the business line is appropriately represented through Analytics Core to Enterprise Informatics and Analytics Program. Communicate with Analytics Core and Data Governance Council leadership (e.g. Co-chairs and Program Manager) actively to improve data quality and reduce waste of analytics resources at the University of Chicago Medicine
  • Effectively partners with enterprise analytics leadership to balance priorities and team capacity. Actively support the democratization and socialization of business line data to analysts across the enterprise through the Analytics Core relationship, while exploiting data and analytics expertise of other departments that will enhance the informing of business line initiatives
  • Comply with and promote data security in compliance with organizational and departmental standards and policies
  • Performs other duties assigned by supervisor
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Mathematics/Statistics, or a related field and five years of progressive experience in a similar position; required
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills; required
  • Self-motivated, able to plan and organize tasks across multiple projects, and ability to meet and exceed deadlines
  • Demonstrated data science knowledge in understanding complex metrics/drivers related to laboratory testing and patient care
  • Ability to use analytic software, report generating software, and analyzing/handling large data residing in large relationship databases
  • A solid grasp of high-level data and analytical tools is required (e.g. Microsoft SQL Server, PL/SQL, Cognos, Crystal Reports, PowerPivot)
  • Thorough understanding of data management, data organization, and database design
  • Expertise with MS Office required (PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Access, Word)
  • Ability to perform custom analyses with minimal guidance from business teams
  • Ability to learn quickly and develop skills as needed
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized
  • Ability to work well under deadlines
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree or greater in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Mathematics/Statistics, Healthcare administration, Business administration, or a related field; preferred.
  • Experience with laboratory and hospital information systems (EMRs) and knowledge of laboratory medicine preferred
  • Prior experience within an academic medical center; desirable
  • Experience in Cognos 8.x / 10.x: Report Studio, Query Studio, Framework manager, Analysis Studio, and Cognos architecture; highly desirable
