Job Description:
The Young and Spence Laboratories at the University of Michigan Medical School in the Department of Internal Medicine are seeking a full-time Applications Programmer/Analyst Intermediate and bioinformatician. Our laboratories collaborate and work with large-scale datasets from mammals (mice, humans) and microbes to study their complex interactions. As part of a dynamic team, the candidate will use their computational skills, biological knowledge and creativity to develop and apply computational techniques to explore biological questions and to guide experimental work.

The candidate will be primarily responsible for contributing advanced data analyses to interdisciplinary research projects, including: experimental design, developing and implementing computational workflows, conducting genomic analyses and presentation/visualization of data.

The candidate will be analyzing large data sets, analyze next-gen sequencing data, including RNA-Seq, single cell RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, etc. and work with standard bioinformatics software tools and packages. The candidate will also candidate will also spend time guiding postdoctoral researchers and graduate students in high-performance computing, programming, and bioinformatics applications.

Required Qualifications:

-Masters’s degree in computer science, biostatistics, bioinformatics or a related field, or equivalent experience.

-Fluency in understanding code written in multiple languages including R, Python, C/C++, Java.

-Substantial expertise in R and Python demonstrated by the ability to write code, analyze large data sets, output striking data visualization.

-Experience with next-gen sequencing data, including functional genomic assays (e.g. RNA-Seq, ChIP-seq, DNA methylation).

-Experience with standard bioinformatics software tools and packages e.g. those found at Bioconductor.

-Practical knowledge of statistical techniques.

-Experience in working on Unix/Linux systems (shell scripting, basic system administration).

-Ability to multi-task, prioritize efforts, and execute independently- and collaboratively-developed ideas in a fast-paced environment.

Desired Qualifications:

-Degrees in other quantitative disciplines such as statistics, physics, data science, will also be considered if they demonstrate experience in the analysis of large data sets.

-Working knowledge of laboratory techniques in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, and genetics is a plus.

-A solid understanding of statistics and experience in the implementation of machine learning and statistical inference algorithms.

-Experience in cloud computing (GCE or AWS).

-A strong publication record.
