Position Description
We are looking for a highly motivated, independent but team-oriented Applications Scientist with strong expertise in Automation and Process Engineering. Application Scientists work closely with production and clinical teams to develop new protocols on automation to meet demands of a growing laboratory and expanding automation needs.
Job duties will include, but are not limited to:
Develop, optimize and implement automated assays to increase throughput and efficiencies in the laboratories;
Create new automation programs on current equipment to meet evolving needs for new protocols and scaling sample throughput;
Analyze current process procedures and provide feedback for their optimization and improvement;
Calibrate, maintain and repair a variety of laboratory instruments, including liquid handling robotics;
Provide real-time support for equipment with hardware/software issues during live runs;
Install and implement new equipment. Perform User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and/or Installation/Operational Qualification Testing (IQ/OQ), if necessary;
Train Lab Technicians on instrument use and automated protocols;
Author and update SOPs for automated processes;
Evaluate new equipment, software and automated solutions to help with purchasing decisions.
Required Skills
Bachelors degree in Engineering, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or related field, plus laboratory experience in nucleic acid research laboratory required;
4+ years of demonstrated experience as an automation engineer, field service technician, or application scientist working in a molecular biology lab;
Solid knowledge of molecular biology equipment, automation and related protocols;
Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS);
Previous experience with Perkin Elmer or Hamilton liquid handling automation is a plus; experience with Tecan, Agilent, and/or Beckman Coulter could also be beneficial;
Experience with programming languages such as VBA and VSTA is a plus;
Must be able to troubleshoot and repair minor issues with liquid handling automation and general laboratory equipment;
A general understanding of GLP practices specifically related to instrumentation such as IQ and OQ testing and calibrations is a plus;
Good laboratory and organizational skills, including the ability to work independently and efficiently are essential;
Ability to multitask is a must, along with an orientation toward teamwork and leadership;
Strong creative thinking and problem solving skills;
Strong interpersonal communication skills required.
