The Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Kansas invites applications for a faculty position at the tenure-track Assistant or Associate level in Genomics to begin as early as August 18, 2015.We are seeking applications from outstanding researchers with experience in genome-level, quantitative approaches to understanding any area in modern experimental biology. The Department of Molecular Biosciences provides a highly interactive, multi-disciplinary research environment that includes successful researchers in genetics and genomics, computational biology, cell and developmental biology, neurobiology, microbiology, biochemstry and cancer biology (www.molecularbiosciences.ku.edu). In addition, the University of Kansas has many excellent core facilities, for example in Genomics, High-Throughput Screening, and Microscopy, that facilitate and enhance departmental research. All scientists with successful, innovative research programs in the area of experimental genomics are encouraged to apply. For more information, see http://www.provost.ku.edu/strategic-plan/initiatives. Applicants must have a PhD in genetics, genomics, or a related discipline, as well as postdoctoral research experience. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level are expected to demonstrate potential for establishing an independent, externally-funded research program, and those at the Associate level must have an established and currently-funded program with clear potential for continuance. The successful candidate will also direct graduate student research and participate in the undergraduate and graduate teaching missions of the University. 40% RESEARCH Maintain an active and productive research program that includes, 1) applying for external research funding, 2) publishing in scientific journals, and 3) presenting findings at professional conferences.40% TEACHING 1) Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biology. 2) Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. 3) Participate in the academic advising of undergraduate and graduate students. 4) Mentor students in research, including serving as a dissertation/thesis director and professional mentor for students. 20% SERVICE 1) Serve on committees at the departmental, College, and University levels as the opportunities arise. 2) Participate in professional service. 3) Participate in departmental meetings.
Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of doctoral and postdoctoral experiences in the letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity described in curriculum vita, (3) statements of research and teaching interests, and (4) letters of reference:1) PhD in genetics, genomics, or a related discipline 2) At least 2 years of postdoctoral experience 3) Publications in highly-ranked journals, and innovative research objectives, demonstrating potential for excellence in research 4) Commitment to teaching courses in the life sciences, as evidenced by educational background and statement of teaching philosophy For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, all of the above are required. In addition, the individual must have an established record of funding, hold an active extramural grant, and be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching. The candidate must meet KU standards for research, teaching, and service sufficient to quality for an appointment at the rank of Association Professor with tenure.
