Job Description:

The Plant Science Department at South Dakota State University (SDSU) is conducting a search for a tenure track Assistant Professor in Plant Bioinformatics/Computational Sciences. This is one of 11 new faculty positions (4 located at SDSU) coordinated with the NSF EPSCoR and South Dakota Research Innovative Center (SDRIC) funded virtual center, Biochemical Spatio-temporal NeTwork Resource (BioSNTR). BioSNTR promotes imaging and informatics research infrastructure in SD. Applicants with innovative research programs in integrative computational biology that complement plant genomic and systems biology research within the SDSU College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences (ABS) will be given the highest priority. SDSU actively seeks to increase social and intellectual diversity among its faculty and staff. Women and persons underrepresented in higher education are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will develop an independent, externally funded research program that compliments or expands the existing molecular and systems biology research programs in the Plant Science Department and the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences. This position will also be networked with the Biochemical Spatio-temporal NeTwork Resource (BioSNTR) Center and the Agricultural Experiment Station within the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences. Efforts within BioSNTR focus on analysis of large-scale genomics and imaging data, application of novel microscopy technologies to study signaling pathways, optical methods for analysis and identification of new compounds to manipulate signaling pathways. Current Genomic and Computational Biology efforts in Plant Science focus on developmental biology and abiotic and biotic stress tolerance in crop plants (agronomic, horticulture and biofuels). Responsibilities of this position include collaborative research within the missions of BioSNTR; graduate training in plant computational/bioinformatics within area of expertise; and participation in departmental, college, and university governance. The successful applicant will have access to established HPC clusters and new computational resources as well as interactions with vibrant research programs in plant science/functional genomics.

For questions on the position, contact Dr. Anne Fennell, Department of Plant Science, SDSU, Box 2207A, 254B Northern Plains Biostress, Brookings, SD 57007, (605) 688-6373 or anne.fennell@sdstate.edu.

Required Qualifications: An earned Ph.D. in Computational Sciences, Bioinformatics, Mathematics or a closely related discipline; a research focus that complements existing SDSU and BioSNTR strengths; demonstrated strong research background and publication record, demonstrated ability to work within multidisciplinary teams, demonstrated potential to develop external funding for a research program, effective interpersonal skills, and oral and written communication skills.

Application Deadline: Position is open until filled, with full consideration given to applications received by November 18, 2014. Desired Qualifications: Post-doctoral or equivalent experience, Plant Computational Biology experience, demonstrated grantsmanship (experience with federal funding agencies preferred), bioinformatic tool development experience and demonstrated teaching experience. Familiarity with plant systems biology approaches.
