The Department of Biological Sciences at California State University San Marcos is seeking applications for three tenure-track Assistant Professor positions: an Animal Physiologist, an Evolutionary Biologist, and a Systems Biologist. Required qualifications are a Ph.D. in the Biological Sciences and postdoctoral (or equivalent postgraduate) training in the specific field associated with each position. Candidates must also possess the ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with departmental colleagues and with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Successful candidates will have a solid record of published research and the ability to develop and sustain an independent research program involving undergraduate and Master’s-level students that will lead to original, peer-reviewed publications. Preference will be given to candidates that provide evidence of teaching effectiveness at the college level. The typical teaching load at CSU San Marcos is three courses per semester, though grant-funded course releases can be used to decrease this load. Preference will also be given to candidates with demonstrated intercultural competence with diverse groups in teaching, research, and/or service. Animal Physiology Desired areas of research interest include but are not limited to: comparative physiology, evolutionary physiology, and developmental physiology.  All sub-divisions of physiology will be considered; however, researchers who focus on invertebrate physiology are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to instruction in current physiology courses and to develop new undergraduate and graduate lecture and laboratory courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Evolutionary Biology Desired areas of research interest include but are not limited to: evolutionary theory and modeling, evolutionary ecology, experimental evolutionary biology, evolutionary developmental biology, and evolutionary behavioral biology.  Researchers with strong quantitative skills and training are especially encouraged to apply. Teaching responsibilities will include some combination of a lower division majors’ course in evolution and possibly biostatistics, upper division biology major core courses such as ecology or genetics, and new undergraduate or graduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Systems Biology/Bioinformatics Desired areas of research interest include all aspects of systems biology and/or bioinformatics. Applicants should have strong background in quantitative and computational research. Teaching responsibilities will include some combination of a lower-division majors course in biostatistics, biology major core molecular/cell or genetics courses; upper division electives in systems biology or bioinformatics, and new undergraduate or graduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Review of applications will commence November 15, 2014 and continue until the positions are filled. Applicants must submit a letter of interest, statement of teaching philosophy (up to 2 pages), a description of research accomplishments and future research goals (up to 3 pages), a curriculum vitae that notes teaching experience (if applicable), and up to three recent peer-reviewed publications. The applicant should have three letters of recommendation sent directly to ANIMPHYS1415@csusm.edu for the Animal Physiology position, or to EVOLBIOL1415@csusm.edu for the Evolutionary Biology position, or to SYSTBIOL1415@csusm.edu for the Systems Biology/Bioinformatics search.
