Assistant/Associate ScientistUniversity of FloridaInterdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology ResearchUSA-Florida-Gainesville The Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research (ICBR) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the level of Assistant/Associate Scientist. This is a 12-month, non-tenured position. The ICBR, founded in 1987, is an auxiliary research support organization providing key biomolecular technology services beneficial to the University of Florida life sciences research community. We seek a doctorate-level bioinformatics scientist with training and experience in applying statistical methods to genomics/proteomics-related data. The ideal candidate will have several years of professional experience providing bioinformatics support for complex research projects involving multidisciplinary scientific teams. The successful candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills, combined with a broad understanding of key biological concepts enabling an integrated understanding of biological data analysis as it relates to underlying biological processes.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Consult with independent laboratory investigators (university faculty members, postdocs, staff, and students) engaging in bioresearch projects (genomic data such as RNAseq or ChIPseq, gene expression, or proteomics data), consider investigator goals, and suggest appropriate statistical designs consistent with meeting those goals.
2. Recommend appropriate methodological procedures for statistical analysis; produce overall descriptive statistics; perform exploratory data analyses, including graphs, summary statistics, and necessary transformations; and confirmatory data analyses, including statistical tests and/or models. Performs sample size and power calculations. Apply appropriate computational methods and data mining techniques for investigating genomic and proteomics data
3. Prepare written reports of statistical analyses, including relevant statistical theory, references, methods, results, and conclusions. Write statistical design, methods, and analysis sections for research proposals and research publications. Contribute significant intellectual/conclusive thought to publications.
4. Discusses with colleagues, investigators, and supervisor needs for any additional analyses and/or special methodological requirements. Participates in regularly scheduled meetings with study investigators and team. Prepares progress reports as needed.
  Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a Ph.D. in a molecular biology-related field together with a strong computational background.
• A minimum of 5 years postgraduate experience in the field of bioinformatics including an established track record in next-generation DNA sequencing data analysis. Preference will be given to those candidates with 3-5 years experience providing bioinformatics support services as a member of a genomics/proteomics research team.
• Working knowledge of mapping and assembly for advanced DNA sequencing technologies (e.g. Illumina, PacBio, Proton/Ion Torrent) highly desirable. Particularly higher-level interpretation of RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, SNP discovery, and whole genome annotation.
• Expertise in at least one statistical programming suite or language (e.g., SAS, Splus/R, Stata, etc.). Expert knowledge of procedural-oriented statistical languages, such as SAS, Splus, R, and/or SPSS. In addition, knowledge of other programming languages, such as C++, Java, Perl, Python desirable.
• Demonstrated aptitude for clearly and enthusiastically communicating with both scientific and non-scientific personnel.
