The Department of Biostatistics & Medical Informatics (BMI) at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health (SMPH) seeks a tenure track assistant/associate/full professor starting by August 2015. We are particularly interested in expanding our departmental strength in clinical research informatics and secondarily in deepening our strength in translational bioinformatics, areas that build on and complement the department’s current research strengths. Relevant methodological expertise may include, but is not limited to, database theory and methods and/or data mining, natural language processing, data privacy and security, and human-computer interaction. The incumbent will conduct, publish, and disseminate methodological and collaborative research in biomedical informatics, including maintaining his/her own independent research program and pursuing applications of informatics to the conduct of clinical/population health research and/or the improvement of clinical care. Attracting and maintaining external funding are parts of the position expectations, as is collaborating with UW-Madison scientists in these areas, either in the SMPH and/or across campus. Responsibilities will include training graduate students, teaching one BMI course per year, and participating in professional, university, and community service appropriate to rank. The successful candidate will join the BMI Department, home to faculty with expertise in computational biology; bioinformatics; clinical research informatics; image analysis; clinical and population biostatistics; and statistical genetics and genomics. Faculty collaborates with scientists across UW and the state, including the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, the UW Carbone Cancer Center, the Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation, the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, and the Morgridge Institute for Research. BMI maintains strong ties to the world-class Departments of Computer Sciences and of Statistics.. BMI is home to a new Center for Predictive Computational Phenotyping, funded under the NIH “Big Data to Knowledge” initiative. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is a world-class academic institution with an international reputation for basic, applied, and interdisciplinary research. UW-Madison recently surpassed $1 billion in annual research expenditures and ranks third in the nation in science and engineering expenditures. Candidates should have a PhD in Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, or a closely related quantitative area; or a doctoral degree in a clinical field (e.g., MD, DDS, DNSc, PharmD) with formal (MS level) training in biomedical informatics with an emphasis in clinical research informatics or translational bioinformatics. For those with clinical credentials, substantial experience and track record or postdoctoral training will be considered in lieu of formal training in Biomedical Informatics.
