Job Description:
Partners HealthCare Personalized Medicine (PPM) is a leader and innovator in helping realize the promise of personalized medicine by accelerating the integration of genetic knowledge into clinical care. PPM is tasked with translating the latest genetic discoveries into routinely orderable genetic tests that are used to improve clinical decision making for patients around the world.

The Associate Bioinformatician I will have the opportunity to assist in the development and maintenance of bioinformatics capabilities which support the activities of the Laboratory for Molecular Medicine (a CLIA-certified molecular diagnostic laboratory), PPMs Translational Genomics Core, and the Partners BioBank. A focus will be the support of next-generation sequencing pipelines in the research, translational, and clinical settings. Assigned tasks will depend on the centers priorities and may encompass responsibilities beyond those described here.

The successful candidate should have a strong scientific background with prior exposure to genetics and/or genomics, excellent communication and problem-solving skills, and the ability to interact with multidisciplinary staff in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

Assist in building different modules of software pipelines for next-generation sequencing applications and array technologies

Provide informatics support in development of clinical diagnostic tests

Assist in mining/annotation of clinical data. A strong understanding of the principles of genetics is a preferred plus.

Assist with current clinical operation pipelines and research operation pipelines

Assist with data quality assessment and troubleshooting

Assist in the analysis, acquisition, and loading of new data sources

Work collaboratively with the group.

Create testing, validation, and standard operation procedure documentation.

M.Sc. in bioinformatics, computer science or related field.

Basic knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and scientific programming.

Experience in a Unix/Linux environment, including proficiency in shell scripting, and scripting in a language such as Perl or Python.

Some experience with R statistical package or MatLab.

Familiarity with common NGS tools (BWA/GATK/Picard Tools, etc).

Familiarity using common bioinformatics databases (UCSC, NCBI, etc).

Ability to work on multiple projects. This is a dynamic environment where priorities often change.

Strong interest in molecular biology and genetics, and a willingness to learn concepts and terminology from these fields as needed.
