Job Description:
Berkeley Lab’s Joint Genome Institute Division has an opening for a Associate Business Systems Analyst. Under general supervision, you will provide computational analysis support for JGI user community science projects, and internal R&D projects. This role will collaborate with other JGI scientists to assist with developing computational workflows for analysis of genomic datasets, including those from resequencing, transcriptomics and epigenomics experiments. The incumbent will also provide analysis support for internal R&D projects testing new high-throughput molecular biology and DNA sequencing approaches. You will provide quality assessments of datasets, as well as deriving initial technical and biological insights. This role will collaborate with JGI and external scientists to determine the types of analyses required, and will communicate at regular intervals to provide progress updates, and facilitate transfer of data and tools. This position reports to the user support analysis group lead.

What You Will Do:

  • Provide computational analysis support for JGI user community science projects and internal R&D projects.
  • Communicate with internal and external scientists to determine analysis needs.
  • Develop and run computational workflows to perform analysis.
  • Collaborate with production informatics to facilitate automation of frequently used workflows.
  • Present technical and analytical status in weekly meetings.
  • Follow prescribed practices for software version control, testing, and release engineering Communicate with internal collaborators.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
  • Stay current with new emerging sequencing technologies.
  • Contribute to publications on sequenced genomes, developed tools, and approaches.
What Is Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related field with a minimum of two years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Background in genome biology and bioinformatics.
  • Familiarity on unix command line and navigating unix file system.
  • Experience using programming languages including Python, Perl, C/C++, Java or others in a Unix environment.
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills to independently make sound judgments and recommend creative solutions to complex problems, while addressing user needs in an effective and timely manner.
  • Proven analytical, organizational, and record-keeping skills with attention to detail; ability to collect, record, and analyze complex and varied experimental data accurately.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills with internal and external staff, users and collaborators. Excellent public-speaking and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to work on multiple projects with varying priorities while meeting tight deadlines.
  • Ability to analyze biological sequence data (R, Python, Perl, C/C++, Java) in a Unix environment.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with SQL, Oracle, MySQL or other RDBMs.
  • Experience with statistical data analysis using R/Matlab.
  • Experience in a multidisciplinary scientific or production environment.
  • Experience in large-scale data analysis and parallel computing.
  • Experience with laboratory molecular biology and DNA sequencing technologies.

This is a full time, 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

Salary is commensurate with experience.
