Job Description:
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic computational scientist to join a team dedicated to advancing Merck’s Oncology and Immuno-Oncology pipelines. The successful candidate will:

Develop, implement, and rigorously assess algorithms for the analysis of high-dimensional molecular data, including whole exome sequencing, bulk RNA-seq, single-cell RNA-seq, and large scale CRISPR screens.

Analyze, visualize and summarize molecular data from oncology clinical trials and from large proprietary and public molecular databases. Identify biomarkers and molecularly defined groups of patients most likely to benefit from individual therapies, and identify mechanisms of therapeutic response and resistance.

Effectively present data analysis methods and results across a wide span of internal organizations, including Therapeutic Area Biology, Translational Medicine, Pharmacology, Statistics, Bioinformatics, and Information Technologies.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Phd in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or related field with a significant computational and statistical component.
  • 5+ years post-PhD experience developing and applying computational biology methods in a pharma, biotech or academic setting. (Minimum 2 years as research scientist following postdoctoral fellowship).
Required Experience and Skills:
  • Demonstrated expertise with scientific computation environments (Matlab and/or R highly preferred).
  • Hands-on analysis experience with large genetic, genomic, and clinical datasets
  • Hands-on experience with key NGS bioinformatics tools (BWA, GATK etc) and with linux high performance environment (shell scripting, python).
  • Proven ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues from a wide range of disciplines.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to guide and influence decisions through use of data-driven hypotheses.
  • Independent, flexible and collaborative mindset.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Expertise in statistical learning and its application to biological problems.
  • Understanding of the major concepts of immuno-oncology biology and of the interaction between tumor and the immune system as represented in molecular data.
  • Experience with analysis of data originating from clinical trials.
  • Record of publishing in high profile scientific journals.
