Design, implement and maintain laboratory automation infrastructure to support high-throughput, high-complexity genetic testing. Work closely with internal and external resources to identify needs, evaluate possibilities, and implement robust solutions appropriate to a regulated commercial laboratory environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop, optimize and implement laboratory automation solutions to improve the reliability and scalability of laboratory assays, processes and procedures.
• Coordinate closely with Laboratory Operations, Product Managers, Bioinformatics, and Information Technology in order to align goals and timelines for automation initiatives.
• Analyze existing processes and identify opportunities for optimization; design and implement improved processes while adhering to change control procedures commensurate with a regulated laboratory environment.
• Develop, optimize, validate and deploy automation programs on existing equipment to take maximal advantage of the current laboratory automation footprint.
• Create and maintain SOPs and other documentation for automated processes in compliance with regulatory and corporate guidelines.
• Train laboratory end-users on instrument use, operation, and maintenance, including procedures associated with specific automated assays.
• Install, calibrate and maintain laboratory automation equipment, including IQ/OQ, as required.
• Provide direct, ongoing support to laboratory personnel to troubleshoot and resolve issues that emerge during processing runs.
• Evaluate new equipment and software capabilities; develop recommendations and budget proposals to support purchasing decisions. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related discipline.
• At least 5 years of experience with laboratory automation, including the development, testing and implementation of automated methods for assays. Laboratory experience is required; experience as a field applications scientist will be considered.
• Detailed working knowledge of Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Next Generation Sequencing, including supporting laboratory equipment.
• Direct experience writing programs/scripts for liquid handling automation systems such as Beckman, Hamilton, or Tecan. Able to troubleshoot and repair automation issues to maximize instrument up-time.
• Proficient in MS Office applications and familiarity with laboratory information management systems is required. Creation of process flow diagrams using Visio or similar software and experience with programming is essential.
• Working knowledge of CAP, CLIA and other applicable regulations/guidelines.
• Working knowledge of six sigma elements such as measurement systems analysis (MSA).
• Must be productive within a team and as an individual contributor in a dynamic environment. Multitasking and adjusting to shifting priorities is essential.
• Self-motivated, organized, creative thinker with strong communication and problem solving abilities.
