Job Description:
Are you a highly motivated Biologist or Bioinformatician with imaging experience who wants to join an exciting international consortium using cutting edge technologies to revolutionise our understanding of the human body? Do you have the motivation and skills necessary to work with new technologies and data types in imaging and genomics to facilitate the data integration this project requires? If so, this position is for you!

The Human Cell Atlas (HCA) is a high profile, multinational project using ground breaking single cell profiling technologies to build a comprehensive reference map of all human cells as a basis for understanding human health and treating disease. Massively multiplexed in situ imaging of gene expression is a critical component of this work. We are looking for a highly-motivated individual to work with the HCA scientific community to design and implement metadata standards to integrate this and other image data into the atlas.

You will be based at EMBL-EBI (Cambridge, UK) where you will join a highly collaborative multinational team developing the HCA Data Coordination Platform. The position involves:

  • Working with HCA imaging projects to capture metadata requirements
  • Developing metadata standards that capture information critical to data re-use and integration within the HCA and beyond.
  • Developing systems to integrate metadata into image processing & analysis pipelines
Qualifications and Experience:

You should hold an MSc, PhD, or have equivalent experience in biological sciences, biomedical imaging, bioinformatics, or related fields. You should have:

  • working knowledge of image-processing and analysis techniques such as image registration and segmentation.
  • coding ability relevant to image analysis pipelines, e.g. MatLab, R, Python.
  • a good understanding of single cell transcriptomics including image-based transcriptomics techniques like Seq-FISH or Mer-FISH.
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills and work well both independently and within a team environment.
  • the ability to use your own own initiative to create and drive projects to a conclusion.
The following skills are desirable:
