Job Description:
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a talented Bioinformatician to work with scientists at the Institute of Food Research (IFR), to analyse whole genome sequence data by the implementation of bioinformatics pipelines, using high performance computing and other available tools.
The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC) on projects involving the molecular epidemiology and comparative genomics of food borne pathogens including Salmonella, Campylobacter and Listeria to improve surveillance, track evolution and adaptation, and identify targets for intervention.
The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC) is supported by the BBSRC to ensure that biological science in the UK has access to a skill base in genomics technologies and bioinformatics to deliver programmes leading to improved food security, advances in industrial biotechnology and improved human health and wellbeing.
Pipelines may include; Variant calling, phylogenetic tree reconstruction, de novo assembly, annotation, subsequence analysis and database query, pan-genome construction and visualisation tools, RNA-seq, 16s profiling analysis and metagenomics.
Candidate Requirements:
To be considered for this post, candidates should be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience (E=essential, D=desirable):
•PhD or equivalent in a natural science discipline with background in computational biology (E)
•Experience of working in high throughput datasets (E)
•Experience with bioinformatics tools (E)
•Ability to write scripts with Perl, Python or similar programming languages (E)
•Experience with molecular biology and computational methods for sequence analysis and interpretation (D)
•Experience in bioinformatics related to whole genome sequence analysis of bacteria (D)
•Excellent written communications skills (E)
•The ability to work as part of an effective team and communicate with staff at all levels (E)
