Job Description:
EMD Serono is the biopharmaceutical division of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, a global pharmaceutical and chemical group. •Responsible for exploratory statistical analyses of genome-wide studies in pre-clincal & clinical programs for identification of pharmaco-dynamic as well as predictive and prognostic biomarkers
•Responsible for the identification of novel drug targets through analyses of relevant public and internal biomedical data in different indication areas
•Responsible for evaluating disease relevance of new targets through analysis of their genetic and genomic alterations in the disease context
•Drive disease indication selection from the analyses of pre-clinical and clinical data
•Characterize model systems for their disease relevance through comparison of molecular profiles
•Identify and evaluate new bio-medical data types and sources for their use in target identification and validation and for patient characterization
•Ensure that clinical study associated activities will be compliant to legal and regulatory requirements (GCP/GCLP)
•Generate concise reports and submit them in time.
•Provide expertise input to other functions in data searching and retrieval of internal and public datasets
•Initiate and manage external collaborations in the Bioinformatics field
•Ensuring the evolution of the group by adopting novel experimental techniques, new computational methodologies and new software solutions
•Developing and documenting best practices in your field of expertise
•Increase external visibility of Bioinformatics by publications, presentations at conferences and scientific courses
•Serve as Discovery or Development Project Team member/leader

Key Tasks and Responsibliities

•Develop, refine and apply high-performance algorithms to analyze and integrate large datasets generated from “omics” and other high throughput screening approaches.
•Perform analysis of high throughput and high content data with leading-edge statistical and bioinformatics methods for target and biomarker identification and validation.
•Interpret your analysis results in the biological and patho-biological context and guide the selection of biomarkers together with the indication scientists.
•Suggest actively new target concepts, new biomarker strategies and provide expert input in indication selection based on your in silico analysis results.
•Handle in parallel several research projects at different stages of development and different priorities in alignment with the function head.
•Combine the public biomedical domain knowledge with in-house generated project and indication specific data and knowledge using bioinformatics expert tools
and advanced analyses techniques.
•Develop and implement computational solutions to new analytical challenges and data visualization requirements in the Bioinformatics field.
•Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge through participation in conferences, external collaborations, and by reading and critically evaluating relevant scientific literature.
•Develop and drive implementation of best practices in her/his field of expertise and write best practice documents.
•Contribute to planning, conducting and troubleshooting of high throughput and high content molecular biological experiments with neighboring functions and CROs.
•Provide daily bioinformatics support to the local therapeutic areas
•Supervise and develop associate scientist.
•Deliver effective oral & written communication.
•Deliver presentations to global Research committees and external conferences

Education/Languages

•PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science or a closely related field.
•Knowledge in adjacent disciplines (biology, chemistry, physics).
•Good English communication skills are mandatory.
•Knowledge of local language is an additional asset.

Professional Skills and Experience

•Minimum 3 years working experience in Bioinformatics and/or Computational Biology preferably with a focus on genetics or genome wide data analysis.
•Demonstrated experience in biomarker data analysis with solid understanding of ethical and regulatory constraints attached to clinical data.
•Demonstrated expertise in statistics and bioinformatics software systems and algorithms.
•Experience as scientific project leader and/or function representative in late stage pre-clinical research projects in different indications is an asset.
•Demonstrated expertise in retrieval and analysis of big data, including but not limited to DNA-Seq, RNA-Seq and CHIP-Seq, GWAS/SNPs, etc for data conversion, interpretation and visualization.
•Demonstrated expertise in applying computational tools for pathway and network analysis, gene mapping and alignment, gene variant/splicing, correlation between gene expression and epigenetic changes, etc.
•Excellent publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
•Understanding of the drug development process ideally including working experience in drug discovery and development
•Demonstrate evidence of strong problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in a matrix environment by influencing and networking efficiently to leverage internal capabilities to increase overall efficiency and productivity.
