College of Life Sciences and Medicine Division of Applied Medicine Applicants are sought for two exciting and varied posts within the growing bioinformatics service of the Centre for Genome Enabled Biology and Medicine (CGEBM) at the University of Aberdeen. You will analyse and interpret a variety of data, including data generated on next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, delivering a scientific service to clinicians and basic scientists as well as maintaining links with other Bioinformaticians and statisticians, both within the Centre and beyond. In line with the College’s research needs, you will also be expected to play a part in increasing the number of internal users of the service and extending the types of projects supported. In this way and with an increase in external funding the service is expected to continue to grow in size and staffing. You will have a postgraduate degree in bioinformatics (or equivalent) and it would be an advantage to also have experience in biology. Strong programming skills (in a language such as Java, C, C++ or Perl), a thorough knowledge of shell scripting and experience in data analysis and use of statistical data are required. Previous experience with analysis of next generation DNA sequence data is also essential, and experience of analysis of other types of genome-scale datasets would be advantageous. You will work in the CGEBM to assist researchers at the University of Aberdeen in using genomics in their research. As part of the bioinformatics service, you will contribute to providing bioinformatics support to researchers and developing the skills and expertise offered by the service. You will work alongside colleagues in bioinformatics, statistics, data management and IT as well as laboratory staff and biologists to support the further development of the CGEBM. It is expected that 10% of your time will be protected to undertake bioinformatics research and development aligned to projects in the Centre and your interests. There is an expectation of co-authorship on publications for studies where the post-holder is involved in data analysis. Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 6 salary scale (£31,342 - £37,394 per annum) with placement according to qualifications and experience. However, exceptional candidates’ will be considered for appoint on the Grade 7 salary scale (£38,511 - £45,954 per annum). For appointment at Grade 7, the candidate would be expected to take a leadership role in development of certain focus areas in bioinformatics within the Centre. It will operate from both the Foresterhill campus, home to top quality biomedical and health services research facilities adjacent to a large acute hospital, and the historic Old Aberdeen campus, where biological and environmental sciences enjoy state of the art facilities for research, teaching and learning.
