Job Description:
Bioinformatician EMBL - European Molecular Biology Laboratory - European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) Location: Hinxton Salary: Not specified Hours: Full Time Contract Type: Contract / Temporary Placed on: 13th May 2015 Closes: 8th June 2015 Job Ref: EBI_00529
Location: EMBL-EBI - Hinxton near Cambridge, UK
Contract Duration: 2 years
Grading: 5 or 6 depending on qualifications and experience
Job Description
We are looking to recruit a bioinformatician to join the Ensembl Genomes Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. The successful applicants will work on the genome of bread wheat, among the most important food crops worldwide.
Ensembl Plants (http://www.plants.ensembl.org) is a leading database for accessing genome-wide scientific data in plants. The successful applicant will work on the genome of bread wheat, among the most important food crops worldwide. (S)he will work integrating many different wheat data types into Ensembl Plants, developing Ensembl Plants into a leading source of information about this vital crop.
The post will involve a varied range of tasks, involving variation data, comparative genomic analysis, integration of related species, and functional annotation. The redevelopment of aspects of Ensembl core infrastructure will also be necessary where wheat data is an insufficient fit to the existing models for data storage and visualisation. Through a BBSRC-funded project, EMBL-EBI is partnered with a number of other UK groups involved at the cutting edge of the challenge of sequencing, and assembling the wheat genome, and collaboration with these groups, and others, is expected to drive the models for the representation and visualisation of the available data within Ensembl. The post holder will join a team focused on the annotation on non-vertebrate systems, and part of a larger collaborative group at EMBL-EBI developing and exploiting Ensembl as a platform for the analysis and dissemination of genomic data across the taxonomic space.
The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and it is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides freely available data from life science experiments, performs basic research in computational biology and offers an extensive user training programme, supporting researchers in academic and industry. We are part of EMBL, Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a degree in a biological or computer science, and proven professional programming experience. Specifically, we expect applicants to possess at least 2 years experience of professional software development (or a bioinformatics PhD).
We are also looking for expert knowledge of Perl and relational databases and experience of handling big data. Knowledge of other modern programming languages, next-generation sequencing analysis, the Ensembl platform or crop genetics is desirable but not essential.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential as is a flexible mind set, a capacity for independent work, and a high level of intellectual curiosity.
Benefits
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension and health insurance, educational and other family related benefits where applicable, as well as financial support for relocation and installation.
We provide a dynamic, international working environment and have close ties with the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
EMBL-EBI staff also enjoy excellent sports facilities, a free shuttle bus to Cambridge and other nearby centres, an active sports and social club and an attractive working environment set in 55 acres of parkland.
The initial contract is for a period of 2 years with the possibility of a fixed-term extension.
