Job Description:
The Bioinformatician 2 is responsible for the design and implementation of bioinformatics services for the rapidly growing Division within the Department of Pathology within the Division of Genomic and Molecular Pathology. Will support and maintain clinical computational pipelines and create data novel algorithms as needed. and use specialized computer software to identify and classify components of scientific biological systems. Will develop and implement software methodologies and computational tools. Actively seeks out emerging industry practices and new technologies to leverage project capabilities. Devise, modify or test procedures to solve complex problems. Execute and roll out efficient project specific solutions. Document, follow up and support projects after initial completion. The Division is looking for individuals who will contribute their skills in a fast-paced cutting edge environment and will leverage state-of-the-art technologies to deliver innovative and exciting solutions for clinical and translational investigators.

Design, development and implementation of data analysis tools and pipelines

Essential Functions to include:

  • Develop new or modify existing procedures to solve complex problems in research projects
  • Design and perform formal evaluation of informatics methods and products
  • Create or modify web-based bioinformatics tools involving next generation sequencing
  • Develop programs to perform analyses and generate both routine and ad hoc reports
  • Manipulate publicly accessible, commercial, or proprietary genomic, proteomic, or post-genomic databases
  • Identify problems, determine solutions, and ensure implementation in a timely manner
  • Independently investigate and implement workflows into production level software
  • Provide bioinformatics support to project based clients and collaborators
  • Consult with researchers to analyze problems, recommend technology-based solutions, or determine computational strategies
  • Communicate research results through conference presentations, scientific publications, or project reports
  • Provide training on biomedical informatics related concepts, applications, and tools
  • Contribute to the development of training, tools, and process documentation
  • Maintain working knowledge of bioinformatics tool and algorithm in the related field
  • Other duties as assigned
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree required, in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field preferred, and three years of relevant experience required,
  • OR
  • Advanced degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field required.
Experience:
  • Experience in programming for bioinformatics with scripting languages such as Perl, Python, R, Java, Perl XML, C/C++ or SQL required. Experience with next generation sequencing technologies and tools such as BWA, Novoalign, STAR, GATK, samtools, Picard and other tools preferred. Experience with algorithmic techniques, data structures and scientific programming preferred.
Competencies:
  • Ability to give presentations and research talks required.
  • Knowledge of regulatory policies and procedures such as HIPAA, FISMA and/or Genomic Data Sharing, etc. preferred.
