Job Description Summary
George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health is looking for a skilled and collaborative bioinformatician to study pathogen genomics in a Public Health context. The bioinformatician will have the opportunity to analyze large genomic datasets from clinical and epidemiologic studies. Work will occur in a high-performance computing environment. The position will involve ample opportunities to learn and develop novel approaches for data analysis in public health research.
Experience in Microbial Bioinformatics research is a plus.
Competitive candidates will have experience in the following: 1) Phylogenetic, comparative genomic, metagenomic, or microbiome analysis and/or 2) Development of solutions for large genomic/-omic data analysis.
Minimum Qualifications
• Masters degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related field. (Sr Research Associate level)
•Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related field. (Sr Research Assistant level)
•3-5 years direct experience in the field is required.
•Demonstrated computer-programming skills in Java and scripting languages such as Perl and/or Python.
•Knowledge of Unix/Linux/Mac OS X/Windows platforms.
•In-depth knowledge of sequence similarity, assembly, and alignment tools.
•Relational database expertise including SQL and schema design.
Desired Qualifications
• 3+ years experience in Microbial Bioinformatics, with demonstration of independent algorithm/software development and independent analysis of next-generation sequencing data.
•Undergraduate or graduate coursework in Microbiology, Biology, Epidemiology, or related topics.
•Knowledge of C/C++, R/S-plus.
•Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
•Experience in phylogenetic, comparative genomic analysis, or bacterial genome assembly and annotation.
•Experience in metagenomic or microbiome data analysis.
•Experience in data mining, big data visualization, or analysis of large multi-omics datasets.
•Strong publication record, especially first-author manuscript(s).
•Strong statistics or mathematics background.
•Work experience in a high powered computing environment.
•Experience or interest in working in a multidisciplinary team setting.
JOB DUTIES
• The Bioinformatician position will require creative work, a collaborative attitude, and strong self-management skills. The individual will participate in multiple projects at any given time and will need to be able to:
•Define challenges and propose solutions
•Participate in defining the bioinformatics challenge and potential solutions in collaboration with the project team.
•Identify and apply existing tools for genomic data analysis, visualization, and management.
• Develop new analysis algorithms
•Design, test, and document algorithms/software based on requirements identified through discussions with a research team, if appropriate tools are not available.
•Maintain and update completed algorithms/software.
•Develop solutions to automate repetitive bioinformatics tasks and scale-up existing/custom algorithms.
•Participate in the maintenance, management, and extension of in-house multi-omic database.
• Participate in collaborative data analysis
•Participate genomic data analyses that can involve utilization of existing/custom tools for:
•Phylogenetic and comparative genomic analysis
•Metagenomic analysis
•Microbiome analysis
•Present and discuss results to outside collaborators and GWU research team.
• Participate in scientific presentation and manuscript preparation
•Participation in lab meetings, departmental meetings, and research seminars.
•Manuscript preparation.
•Contribute to grant proposals, as needed.
•Opportunities to attend scientific conferences with oral or poster presentation.
