Job Description:
The Dean's Office in the Faculty of Nursing invites applications for a Bioinformatician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 10 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension. Perform highly complex and highly analytical functions High level concentration, resourcefulness, and creativity Participate in design and development of precision equipment and processes Determine own priorities and deadlines High impact of error Deal effectively with major complex issues Recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices Demonstrate strong communication, team and client service skills Resourceful, innovative, and creative problem solving Work independently and with broad directives with minimal direction The bioinformatician associated with the CRIO Resilience study will report directly to the Lead of the CRIO Resilience Study and under the supervision of the co-lead in the Centre for Health Genomics and Informatics. The informatician will support a group of researchers in dealing with very large volumes of accumulated data and use computer technology to store, retrieve, analyze, and present it effectively and efficiently. - Perform computation and generates information from research data, using existing methods/tools/solutions, to meet requirements of Scientists, colleagues, and/or trainees.
- Create computer programs and leverage appropriate software tools and applications to solve bioinformatics problems.
- Scripts bioinformatic tasks (e.g., sequence searching and manipulation).
- Access large repositories of data through scripting procedures and the analysis and modification of existing bioinformatics scripts as required.
- Documents and manages tasks employing good programming hygiene practices to minimize errors and maximize efficiency (e.g., reusability of code).
- Responsible for executing multiple bioinformatics priorities for the lab or core facility.
- Work independently to meet deadlines.
- Provide input and guidance to trainees, lab staff, or scientists to advance research or project objectives.
- Communicates results and findings of analyses to stakeholders.
- Works closely with the PI and other members of the lab to develop and troubleshoot software.
- Oversees systems for data storage and back-up.
- Builds databases that link and compile various types of data.
- Provides bioinformatics support and training to research staff and trainees with varying computer science backgrounds.
- Delivers helpful, professional, and timely one-on-one assistance.
- Conducts bioinformatics analyses in support of specific research projects and grant applications.
- Accountability for appropriate documentation, reporting and data management.
- Maintains confidentiality, adheres to safety regulations, and is flexible in providing assistance in other areas as required.
- Produces data reports, summaries, and graphics.
- Maintains compute environments that enable standardized, replicable analyses
- Minimum of Bachelor's level education in Computer Science, Bioinformatics or equivalent experience
- Masters level will be preferred
- Minimum of one-year experience in an academic or industry setting where the individual has received training in and/or been able to apply knowledge working with data sets
- Candidates who possess knowledge and education in a biology-related fields, such as neuroscience and mental health, as well as computing will be preferred
- Experience with large genomic (genome-wide array and/or next generation sequencing) datasets and relevant databases (e.g., Gene Ontology, UCSC Genome Browser)
- Experience with data management and dataset manipulation
- A firm understanding of relational database concepts
- Familiarity with specific laboratory or core facility processes, guidelines, and tools (e.g. sequence alignment, variant annotation)
- Experience with computer operating systems (e.g., UNIX, Windows), programming and scripting (e.g., C, Perl, HTML, Java), data Storage, management and analysis (Oracle, SQL)
- Experience with data visualization and presentation tools
- Excellent communication skills and thrive in a collaborative team. Strong verbal and written communication skills (fluency in English is necessary)
- Demonstrates leadership, communication, organization, problem solving, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to work under pressure
