Job Description:
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, highly motivated Bioinformatician to work in the EGA and Archive Infrastructure Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.

The successful applicant will work with a focused team of developers, biologists and user support personnel to provide a world leading reference genetic variation resource as part of the European Genome-phenome Archive (EGA) project. You will engage in both internal and external (national and international) collaborations, especially the RD-Connect consortium (www.rd-connect.eu) and will have the opportunity to gain expertise in biological ontologies, metadata and scientific data modelling primarily related to research into rare disease. RD-Connect is a platform for connecting databases, registries, biobanks and clinical bioinformatics for rare disease research. You will also work with software developers to implement scalable databases and Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) pipelines for the management, transfer and analysis of human genetic data.

At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 22 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.

Qualifications and Experience:

You should hold a bachelor's or higher degree in computer science, computational biology or bioinformatics.

You will have:

Relevant experience and skills in computational biology, bioinformatics, machine learning, or statistics Proficiency with: Java, C/C++, R, Python, Perl, and Unix

Experience of international collaborations

Proficient in next-generation sequencing data analysis and variant analysis

Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others

Experience dealing with real-world data problems such as versioning, ensuring reproducibility and traceability

The ability to work within a team and international consortium is critical to this position, and excellent communication skills and an ability to work to tight deadlines are essential. The bioinformatician will be required to communicate technical documents and take part in the daily scrum with software developers, as well as provide user orientated communication with external and internal users of the systems.
