Job Description:
IHRC, Inc. provides scientific, information management and administrative program support to various Centers, Institutes and Offices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under several contracts. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of IHRC, Inc. and will be assigned to the Enteric Diseases Laboratory Branch (EDLB), Division of Foodborne, Waterborne, and Environmental Diseases (DFWED), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide scientific and technical support for the EDBL.

The Bioinformatician I will perform bioinformatics support for the Enteric Diseases Laboratory Branch to aid in surveillance (cluster detection) and outbreak investigations of enteric bacterial pathogens.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

-Perform quality control, assembly, annotation, identification of known antimicrobial resistance elements and analysis of pathogen genome sequences and metagenomics sequences.

-Assist with outbreak response analysis activities during national and international foodborne disease outbreaks including phylogenetic analyses.

-Support data management systems with EDLB.

-Manage genome and metagenome sequence files and database, including uploads to NCBI or other similar sequence data banks.

-Assist with development and implementation of tools for bioinformatic analysis of bacterial whole genome sequences and metagenomics sequences.

-Prepare and deliver clear, concise and accurate reports and presentations for supervisors, colleagues, and collaborators at internal and external meetings.

-Travel in order to 1) provide training to enhance the capacity of the local/international public health sector 2) provide outbreak response analysis efforts during national and international foodborne disease outbreaks 3) present findings at scientific meetings.

-Fulfill mandatory BioSafety and IT security training requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and experience:

-Master’s degree, from an accredited academic institution, in a scientific discipline related to the responsibilities of the position. -2-4 years of experience in the analysis of bacterial pathogens utilizing genomic analysis techniques.

Required:

-Experience and knowledge of genomic analysis software as related to the detection of bacterial pathogens in clinical samples.

-Experience with the analysis, curation and cluster analysis of disease outbreak data.

-Experience with standard microbiological and molecular techniques.

-Experience with outbreak support and consultation.

-Documentation of daily work with good laboratory practice compliance.

-Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

-Experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts .

Desirable:

-Experience working in a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) environment.

-Experience maintaining inventory of samples using MS Excel and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

-Experience in the preparation and training of others in DNA analysis techniques.

-Familiarity with foodborne pathogens.

-Experience working in a similar capacity in a Public Health setting,

-Ability to work and build coalitions with partners involved, and develop strategies for effectively convey information to partners.

-Ability to work independently and yet to maintain the flexibility to respond to requests for support of ongoing projects.

Language Skills: The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
